The Five Chemistries
Every granular de-icer on this site is built on one of these, or a blend of them. The differences are real and they show up in cost, in cold weather performance, and in what the product does to your surfaces over several seasons.
1. Rock Salt, Sodium Chloride
The default for a century, because nothing melts more ice per dollar. It slows badly below about 15 F and it is the harshest of the common de-icers on concrete, metal and planting. Use it on established asphalt and concrete, in open areas, where cost per pound is what matters.

2. Calcium Chloride
The performance option. It is exothermic, meaning it releases heat as it dissolves, so it keeps working far below where rock salt gives up, and it acts fast. It costs several times more per pound and it is still a chloride, so the surface cautions apply. Round pellets penetrate ice faster than flakes.

3. Magnesium Chloride
The middle ground. Less aggressive than rock salt or calcium chloride on paws, planting and concrete, while still melting well into the negative range. It draws moisture from the air, so keep the container sealed or it cakes. Flake form has more surface area than pellets and starts working on contact.

4. CMA, Calcium Magnesium Acetate
The gentle one, and the answer when the surface matters more than raw melting power. CMA is an acetate rather than a chloride. It works partly by stopping ice particles bonding to each other and to the pavement, which is a different mechanism from brute force freezing point depression. That is why it is markedly kinder to concrete, planting and paws, and why it costs more.

5. Blends and Treated Products
Most premium ice melts are blends, because each chemistry covers a weakness in another. A typical blend pairs magnesium chloride for fast action with sodium chloride for volume and cost, plus corrosion inhibitors to protect metal and CMA to slow refreezing.

What About Traction Grit?
Grit does not melt anything. It gives an immediately rough surface on ice, and it works at any temperature because it is not a chemical reaction. That makes it the right answer in three situations no de-icer handles well: concrete less than twelve months old, a sealed paver patio you do not want to salt, and a cold snap deep enough that nothing chemical is going to work. Plenty of contractors use both, grit on the steps and a de-icer on the open driveway.

Liquids: Treat Before the Storm
Granular de-icer is reactive. You wait for ice to bond, then spread product to break that bond. A liquid put down on a dry surface beforehand leaves a film that stops the bond forming at all, so what lands can be swept off. On steps and porches, where a shovel is awkward and a fall is expensive, that is a much better trade.

The Rules That Apply to Every De-Icer
- Clear the loose snow first. De-icer is for the bonded layer underneath. Spreading it on a snowbank wastes most of it.
- Spread thinly. More product does not melt faster. It runs off, costs more and does more damage.
- Shovel the slush away once the bond breaks, before it refreezes overnight.
- Nothing goes on concrete under twelve months old. It has not fully cured and any de-icer will cause spalling.
- Rinse metal and sweep planting beds at the end of the season, whatever you used.
- Wipe your dog’s paws after walks. Even a pet friendlier product will irritate if it is laid on heavily.
A Note on Colored Granules
Several products in our range come in colored granules. The color is functional rather than decorative. Plain white de-icer vanishes the moment it lands on snow, which is how people end up spreading three times what they need in one strip and nothing in the next. Colored granules show you your own coverage, and the color fades as the product works, so when it is gone you know the area needs another pass.
