View full detailsPaver and stone cleaners for the specific problems hardscape actually gets: efflorescence bloom, motor oil, rust from sprinklers and furniture, leaf tannin, mould and moss, and polymeric haze left after a sand install. Using the wrong chemistry is how good hardscape gets ruined, so these are grouped by what they remove rather than by brand.
Most of these are now available as 8 oz samples so you can prove a cleaner lifts your stain before buying a gallon.
| Problem | What You Need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| White bloom on new pavers | Efflorescence remover | Mineral salt from the concrete. Acid free formulas avoid etching |
| Motor oil, grease | Oil and grease remover | Absorbing types dry to a powder you sweep up, best on old soaked stains |
| Rust, orange staining | Rust remover | From sprinkler water, metal furniture or fertilizer |
| Leaf marks, wine, moss | Organic stain cleaner | Organic stains break down, they do not dissolve like oil |
| Haze after a sand install | Polymeric haze remover | Sand cured on the paver face, needs a dedicated product |
| General dirt and grime | Concentrated hardscape cleaner | The everyday clean and the standard pre-seal step |
Acid based cleaners, especially muriatic, will clear efflorescence quickly and will also etch the surface, lighten the colour and kill any plant it runs into. Etching is permanent. Marble, travertine, limestone and wet cast are particularly vulnerable.
Almost every sealer manufacturer requires a clean, dry, open surface. Sealing over dirt or efflorescence traps it under the film permanently and there is no fix short of stripping. If you are heading toward a seal job, browse paver sealers and clean first.
