How This Calculator Works
Most polymeric sand calculators ask for your square footage and divide by a single average coverage number. That is why they are so often wrong. Coverage is not a property of the sand alone. It depends just as much on how much joint your paving actually has, and that changes enormously with paver size.
A 4 by 8 in holland paver has more than twice the linear feet of joint per square foot as a 24 by 24 in slab. Fill both at the same joint width and depth and the small pavers will drink roughly two and a half times the sand. A single average figure cannot describe both jobs.
So this calculator works the way the manufacturers do. It measures the joint volume your paving creates from your paver dimensions and your joint width and depth, then converts that volume into bags using the joint volume formula SEK Surebond publishes, which treats a 50 lb bag as 864 cubic inches of joint fill. Other pack sizes are scaled by weight. Every result carries a 10 percent waste allowance.
Beside your estimate we show the coverage range the manufacturer publishes for the sand you picked, taken from their own technical data sheet and linked so you can check it. The two figures will not always match, and they are not supposed to. The published range is a broad average measured on the manufacturer reference paver. Your estimate is specific to the job you described. Order from the estimate and use the range as a sanity check.
The calculator also checks your numbers against the sand you selected. If your joint is wider than the product is rated for, narrower than its minimum, or shallower than the depth the manufacturer specifies, it will tell you before you order rather than after the sand fails.
It is still an estimate. Joints vary across a real installation, base preparation is never perfectly uniform, and an older surface with weathered edges will take more sand than a new one. Round up rather than down. Running out partway through leaves a visible seam where the two batches meet, and an unopened bag is far easier to deal with than a half filled joint.

Joints are rarely uniform, so measure in several spots and use the average. Round up and keep a spare bag on hand for touch ups.
How Much Polymeric Sand Do You Need?
Polymeric sand coverage comes down to three things: joint width, joint depth and paver size. Small pavers such as 4x8 holland stone create far more linear feet of joint per square foot than a 24x24 slab, so they use noticeably more sand at the same joint width.
As a general guide, one 50 lb bag of polymeric sand covers roughly:
- Narrow joints, 1/8 in to 1/4 in wide: about 75 to 100 sq ft
- Medium joints, 3/8 in to 1/2 in wide: about 40 to 60 sq ft
- Wide joints, 3/4 in to 1 in wide: about 20 to 35 sq ft
- Extra wide joints, 2 in and up: about 10 to 20 sq ft

Polymeric Sand Questions and Answers
How many square feet does a bag of polymeric sand cover?
A 50 lb bag usually covers about 75 to 100 sq ft with narrow 1/8 in to 1/4 in joints, 40 to 60 sq ft with 3/8 in to 1/2 in joints, and 20 to 35 sq ft once joints reach 3/4 in to 1 in, based on roughly 1 in of joint depth. Coverage varies by brand, so check the coverage chart for the product you choose.
How much polymeric sand do I need per square foot?
Most paver projects use somewhere between 0.3 lb and 1 lb of polymeric sand per square foot. The exact figure depends on paver size and joint width: tight joints on large format slabs land at the low end, while narrow pavers with 1/2 in joints land at the high end. The calculator above works this out for your specific dimensions.
What is polymeric sand and how does it work?
Polymeric sand is graded jointing sand blended with binders that activate when you water them in. As the joints dry, the binder sets and locks the sand into a firm, flexible joint that resists washout, weeds and insects. Learn more in our article on what polymeric sand is.
How deep do polymeric sand joints need to be?
Most manufacturers require a minimum joint depth of about 1 in, and many recommend 1-1/2 in for best durability. Shallow joints are the most common cause of premature cracking and washout, so remove old material until you reach the required depth before you sweep new sand in.
What is the widest joint polymeric sand can fill?
Standard formulas handle joints up to about 1 in. Wide joint formulas cover up to 2 in, 4 in and even 6 in for flagstone and irregular stone. Use the joint width groupings in Step 1, or compare polymeric sands side by side to match a product to your joints.
Can you put polymeric sand over existing sand?
Not directly. Polymeric sand will not bond to loose sand underneath, so it can crack or sink. Remove the existing joint material to the depth the manufacturer specifies, make sure the joints are dry and clean, then install the new sand full depth.
How long does polymeric sand take to cure?
Joints normally set firm within a few hours, and most brands ask for 24 hours before foot traffic and 24 to 72 hours before vehicles. You also need a dry weather window, generally at least 24 hours with no rain after watering, for the binder to cure properly.
Do you have to wet polymeric sand?
Yes. Water activates the binder, so the sand must be watered in exactly as the bag instructs. Use a shower style nozzle, water in short stages so the joints absorb rather than flood, and stop before sand starts washing out of the joints. Our installation tips walk through the process.
What temperature can you install polymeric sand in?
Install when pavers and air are above freezing and rising, ideally 50 F or warmer, with dry conditions before and after. Cold, damp or dew heavy conditions slow curing and can leave weak joints. There are wet weather formulas designed for less than ideal windows.
Will polymeric sand stop weeds and ants?
It dramatically reduces both. Hardened joints leave little room for ants to tunnel or for seeds to root, which is the main reason it outperforms regular sand. Seeds blown onto the surface can still sprout on top of the joint, so occasional maintenance is normal.
How long does polymeric sand last?
Properly installed joints commonly last around 8 to 12 years or more before they need attention. Lifespan depends on joint depth, drainage, traffic, freeze and thaw cycles, and whether the surface is sealed. High traffic driveways typically need touch ups sooner than patios.
Is polymeric sand better than regular sand for pavers?
For joints, yes in most cases. Regular sand washes out in rain, invites weeds and lets ants build nests, while polymeric sand hardens into a stable joint. Regular sand still has its place as bedding material. See our comparison of polymeric sand vs regular sand.
Can polymeric sand be used on porcelain pavers?
Use a formula made for porcelain and other non porous surfaces, such as a porcelain specific jointing sand. Dense porcelain does not absorb water the same way concrete does, so standard products are more likely to leave haze or residue on the surface.
What should I use for permeable pavers or pool decks?
Permeable systems need a permeable jointing product that lets water drain through the joint instead of sealing it. For pool decks and other constantly wet areas, choose a product rated for wet exposure. Browse all options in our polymeric sand collection or ask us for a recommendation.
How do I avoid haze or staining on my pavers?
Haze almost always comes from sand left on the paver surface when water hits it. Sweep the joints, then blow the surface completely clean with a leaf blower before watering, work in small sections, and follow the watering steps on the bag rather than soaking the whole patio at once.
Can I use polymeric sand on a driveway?
Yes, and it is a good idea for vehicle traffic because locked joints resist washout and shifting. Choose a high performance formula rated for vehicular use, install full joint depth, and allow the longer cure time before driving on it.
How much does polymeric sand cost per bag?

Which color should I choose?
Color choice is mostly about contrast with your pavers: grays and tans blend in, while darker colors frame each stone. Colors look different in sunlight than on a screen, so order color samples before committing to a full pallet.
What happens if it rains right after installing polymeric sand?
Rain before the joints are watered in and cured can wash the binder out, leave weak joints and splash sand onto the paver surface where it stains. Most brands need at least 24 hours of dry weather after activation, so check the forecast before you start. If a surprise shower is coming, cover the area with plastic sheeting propped up so it does not touch the wet joints.
Why is my polymeric sand not hardening?
The usual causes are overwatering, cool or humid weather, sand that got damp before installation, or loose old sand left underneath the new joints. Give the joints several warm, dry days before judging the result. If they are still soft after a week, the material typically needs to come out and be reinstalled following the watering steps on the bag.
Why is my polymeric sand cracking or washing out?
Cracking and washout almost always trace back to joints that were too shallow, too much or too little water during activation, poor drainage under the pavers, or rain before the joints cured. How do you remove polymeric sand from pavers?
Soak hardened joints with hot water to soften the binder, then work the sand out with a joint scraper, screwdriver or careful pressure washing. Can you put new polymeric sand over old polymeric sand?
No, a thin topper layer will not bond to hardened sand underneath and usually flakes out within a season. Remove the failed joints down to the depth your manufacturer requires, generally at least 1 in, make sure the joints are clean and dry, then install fresh sand at full depth.
Can I use mortar or cement instead of polymeric sand?
For pavers set on a sand or gravel base, polymeric sand is the better choice because it flexes with freeze and thaw cycles instead of cracking, and repairs are far easier. Mortar is rigid and is best reserved for stone or pavers set on a concrete slab. Mixing dry cement with sand as a substitute tends to crack and can permanently stain pavers.
Can you pressure wash pavers that have polymeric sand?
Yes, once the joints are fully cured, but use a wide fan tip, moderate pressure and spray at an angle across the surface rather than straight down into the joints. Direct high pressure can blow out even well cured joints. If a section does come loose, sweep in fresh sand and water it in to reactivate.
Should you seal pavers before or after polymeric sand?
Install the polymeric sand first, then seal. Most manufacturers recommend waiting about 30 days so the joints are fully cured and any efflorescence has worked its way out. A joint stabilizing sealer adds an extra layer of protection to both the pavers and the sand.
Can polymeric sand be used between flagstone?
Yes, flagstone is one of the most common uses. Because flagstone joints are wide and irregular, choose an extra wide joint formula rated for 4 in or 6 in joints from the groupings in Step 1 above, or compare wide joint sands side by side to match a product to your stone.
What are the disadvantages of polymeric sand?
It costs more than regular sand, needs a dry weather window, and the installation is less forgiving: sand left on the surface can haze, and hardened joints take effort to remove if something goes wrong.
