Polymeric and Paver Sand FAQs

What is polymeric sand?

Sometimes referred to as jointing sand or paver sand, polymeric sand is a joint sand compound made from sand, granite dust, silica, and adhesives combined with a mixture of water-activated polymers.

Where did polymeric sand originate from?

Techniseal, a world-renowned manufacturer of high-quality products for installing, upkeep, and protecting concrete pavers and other outdoor surfaces, invented polymeric sand.

When did polymeric sand originate?

Jointing sand originated in 1999.

What are the different types of polymeric sand?

There are two main categories of polymeric sand: standard polymeric and polymeric dust. The type best suited for your project will depend on what kind of pavers you have installed.

Does paver sand expand?

Yes, polymeric sand enables the joints to expand and contract according to temperature changes.

Applications of Polymeric Sand

Where should I purchase polymeric sand from?

You can find the world’s leading collection of jointing sand on polymericsandstore.com.

How should I install jointing sand?

The installation process has three major steps:

  1. Prepare the surface
  2. Apply the polymeric sand
  3. Add water

That’s it! Check out this blog for a more in-depth explanation of how to use and apply polymeric sand.

In what conditions should I install polymeric sand?

To guarantee an effective installation, you should install jointing sand at a temperature of 32°F or above. For installation on a drainage base, ensure that there is no rain in the forecast within one hour of installation, and for a non-drainage base, ensure that there is no rain within 24 hours of installation.

How should I water polymeric sand?

Start by finding a hose with an adjustable nozzle and turning it to the shower setting. For sloped surfaces, begin at the bottom and work your way up. Focus on smaller sections at a time; for instance, water 30 square feet sections for 30 seconds at a time. Using just the right amount of water pressure ensures that no surface dries out throughout the watering process and that the sand stays in the joints. You did it right if the sand is 1/8 inch below the paver edge or chamfer.

When is the best time to clean and seal polymeric sand?

In the past, concrete paver manufacturers would wait at least 90 days following installation to apply sealant. Now, the waiting time is 30 days.

How long does it take for polymeric sand to harden?

Staying away from walks and patios for at least 24 hours is a good practice. If the pavers are for the driveway, wait 48 hours before driving over them.

What is the lifespan of polymeric sand?

Paver sand typically lasts 3-5 years, but with proper installation and maintenance, it can last as long as 10 years. This lifespan can vary depending on weather conditions, foot traffic, and the type of pavers used.

Can polymeric sand be removed?

Jointing sand can be challenging to remove, so when in doubt, hire a professional. This approach will remove the sand without leaving your pavers damaged. If hiring a professional is not feasible or not the preferred option, you can do it yourself, but try to remove the polymeric sand from the pavers as soon as possible after installation. If dry/loose, sweep the excess sand with a broom and then go in with a leaf blower to remove the rest. If the sand has set, wash the pavers with water. Try doing this with a hose, and if the hose does not work, resort to a pressure washer. Ensure the pressure washer is in a low-pressure setting, at about 1600-2000 PSI, and the water is hot.

Polymeric Sand vs. Regular Sand

What is the difference between polymeric sand and regular sand?

The chemical makeup of polymeric sand makes it more effective as a joint sanding material. Polymeric sand has a much longer lifespan than regular sand and is relatively impenetrable, weed, and insect-resistant. This resistance of polymeric sand provides reassurance for your outdoor spaces. What are the benefits of polymeric sand?

The short answer: jointing sand is quick and easy to install, weather, temperature, weed, and insect resistant, and comes in various colors. The long answer: read our blog on the advantages of polymeric sand, where we delve into its durability, stability, and aesthetic appeal, among other benefits!

Is polymeric sand worth it?

Yes! Polymeric sand outcompetes the alternatives in aesthetics and durability for paver projects. If you want durable and even joints, polymeric sand is the way to go!
