How This Resin and Permeable Joint Sand Calculator Works

Resin and permeable jointing materials are sold by the pail or bucket rather than the bag, and how far one goes has very little to do with your square footage on its own. It is set by how much joint volume you actually have to fill, and that is a different number on every job.

Joint volume, not floor area

Fill a 500 sq ft patio of 4 by 8 in holland pavers and you are filling roughly two and a half times the joint volume of the same 500 sq ft laid in 24 in slabs, because small units carry far more linear feet of joint per square foot. Joint width and joint depth then multiply that. This is why the calculator asks for your paver dimensions rather than just the area, and why a single average coverage figure is close to useless on this category.

Air cured against water activated

Air curing products cure through exposure to air rather than a watering step, which is what lets them be installed in damp conditions or with rain in the forecast. Water activated products need the watering sequence done properly to bind. The difference does not change how much you need, but it changes whether you can install on the day you planned to, so the product notes in Step 1 say which is which.

Permeable joints are a different job

On a permeable installation the joint has to keep draining after it is filled. That rules out anything that closes the joint, and it means the chip aggregates on this page are filled and consolidated rather than swept and watered like a polymeric sand. Where a manufacturer publishes only one coverage figure for a chip product rather than a chart by joint width, the calculator says so in the product notes rather than inventing a curve.

Why we add 10 percent

The recommended count carries about 10 percent over the exact figure. That covers the material left in the pail and on the tools, the joints that turn out deeper than they measured, and the section you redo because the first pass sat proud. Unopened pails can usually go back, so ordering the extra one costs you nothing but a trip.

A note on published figures

Coverage here comes from each manufacturer published data, and where a product has no published chart the notes say whose guidance you are looking at. Always confirm against the current data sheet for your batch, and run a small section first if you have not used the product before.

What is resin jointing sand?

Resin jointing sand is a pre-mixed, brush-in joint compound made of graded sand coated with resin binders. Unlike traditional polymeric sand, most resin formulas come ready to use in a sealed pail, and many cure through air exposure alone with no water activation needed. The result is a firm but flexible joint that resists weeds, ants and washout.

What is the difference between resin jointing sand and polymeric sand?

Polymeric sand is a dry mix you sweep into the joints and activate with water, while resin jointing sand comes pre-activated or air-curing in a sealed pail, so weather is far less of a factor. Resin sand costs more per square foot but is more forgiving on porcelain and in damp climates. For standard concrete pavers with a dry forecast, polymeric sand is usually the budget-friendly pick.

Can you install resin jointing sand in the rain?

Many resin sands tolerate damp conditions, and air-cured formulas like Gator Nitro-X can go down rain or shine, which is a major advantage over polymeric sand and its required 24 hour dry window. Water-activated resin products still need their watering step, so check the preparation notes for your product above.

How much does a pail of resin jointing sand cover?

Coverage depends on joint width, joint depth and paver size. A 27.5 lb pail goes furthest on large-format pavers or porcelain with narrow joints, while small pavers and wide joints use far more material. Is resin jointing sand permeable?

Most resin jointing sands are permeable, meaning the cured joint lets rainwater drain through instead of sealing the surface. That helps prevent puddling and makes products like SRW WetLok a natural fit for permeable paver systems. Check the description for your specific formula.

Does resin sand work on porcelain pavers?

Yes, resin jointing sand is one of the most popular choices for porcelain tile and slabs because it avoids the polymer haze that standard jointing sands can leave on dense, non-porous surfaces. Use the porcelain surface option in Step 2 for accurate coverage numbers.

How long does resin jointing sand take to cure?

Most resin joints accept light foot traffic within about 24 hours, while vehicle traffic can require 5 to 7 days and full cure up to 28 days depending on the product, temperature and humidity. See the preparation and installation notes for your product above for exact times.

Does resin jointing sand stop weeds and ants?

Yes. The resin binds the sand into a firm joint that leaves no loose material for ants to nest in and little room for weed seeds to root. Seeds that blow onto the surface can still sprout on top of the joint, so an occasional sweep keeps things clean.

Can you save leftover resin jointing sand?

Often, yes. Some products reseal in their pail while others are stored covered with a couple of inches of water, with shelf life commonly around 18 months. Check the storage note for your product above, and remember unopened pails can usually be returned.

Do you need to seal pavers after using resin jointing sand?

No, sealing is optional since the resin joint is already bound and water resistant on its own. If you do want to seal the pavers for color enhancement or stain protection, most manufacturers recommend waiting about 30 days after installation.
