The Coldest Working Ice Melt You Can Buy, And It Is Not Close
Peladow is calcium chloride, and calcium chloride is the only common de-icer that keeps working at -25 F. Everything else on this page quits somewhere north of that. OxyChem also rate it to melt up to three times faster than competing materials, which is what you want at 6am on a commercial walkway.

Why Calcium Chloride Beats Rock Salt In Real Cold

Plain rock salt stops doing useful work around 15 to 20 F. Below that it is just grit. Calcium chloride works two ways instead: it drops the freezing point far lower, and dissolving it actually releases heat, so it attacks the ice from underneath rather than waiting for sun.

  • Works to -25 F. The practical floor for any granular de-icer.
  • Exothermic. Significant heat is released as the pellets dissolve, which speeds up the melt.
  • Round pellet shape. OxyChem specifically make it round because pellets bore down through ice and break the bond with the pavement faster than flat or crystal shaped melters.
  • Up to three times faster. Across a wide temperature range, not just in the cold.
  • Meets ASTM D98 and AASHTO M144. Type S, Grade 2, Class B calcium chloride.

Application Rate

Calcium chloride goes further than rock salt, so over applying is both wasteful and harder on surfaces. Spread thin and let it work.

Rate 28 lb per 1,000 sq ft
Equivalent 4 oz per square yard
Coverage per 50 lb bag About 1,800 sq ft at the recommended rate
Form White free flowing round pellets

Surface Guidance, Straight From OxyChem

  • Concrete at least one year old. Safe when applied properly. New concrete has not cured enough for any de-icer.
  • Composite decking and grass. Safe when properly applied.
  • Not recommended on wood. Decking boards, steps and thresholds.
  • Not recommended on masonry or stone. Which matters on a hardscape patio, so read this before you salt a bluestone walkway.

Choosing Between Our Ice Melts

If the forecast is genuinely cold, calcium chloride is the answer and Peladow is the benchmark. If you need something gentler around pets, planting or natural stone, look at our magnesium chloride and CMA blended products instead. They do not go as cold, and that is the trade.

Salting Over Pavers Or Natural Stone?
OxyChem do not recommend calcium chloride on masonry or stone, and we would rather tell you that before you buy than after. Tell us what the surface is and we will point you at the right product. Call or text (856) 418-4895 or email info@polymericsandstore.com.
