Friendly Paw is the pet friendly blend for homes with dogs. Arctic Fox, Green Seal and Pink Penguin are the CMA based products, chosen where new concrete, planting beds or pets are in the picture and a straight chloride would do damage. Glacier Grip is stone dust traction grit rather than a melter, for the days you want footing without putting any chemistry down at all.
Pink Blizzard and MeltMaxx are the general purpose blends. Halite Crystals and EveryMan’s Rock Salt are the lowest cost per pound over big open areas where surface sensitivity is not a concern. Magnesium Chloride Flakes work colder than rock salt, and there is a Liquid Ice Melt for pre-treating a surface before the storm arrives, which is usually easier than clearing ice afterwards.
This is the decision that matters, and getting it wrong is how new concrete ends up spalling. In short: rock salt is cheapest and hardest on concrete and planting, calcium chloride works coldest, magnesium chloride is gentler, and CMA is the one specified around new concrete and pets. Traction grit does not melt anything but it does stop people falling over.
Our ice melt buying guide walks through all five chemistries by working temperature, surface safety and cost, and points at the right product for each.
Most of the line comes in 8, 20 and 45 lb pails plus 25 and 50 lb bags, so you can buy a pail for the front steps and a bag for the driveway without paying for either twice. Pails reseal, which matters more than people expect when a bag of ice melt has spent a damp winter in a garage. Colored Ice Melt is available where you want to see your coverage as you spread it, which cuts down on over-application.
Which ice melt is safe for pets?
Friendly Paw is the pet friendly blend. The CMA products, Arctic Fox, Green Seal and Pink Penguin, are also chosen for pet areas. Rinse paws after walks whatever you use.
Which is safe for new concrete?
CMA based products are the ones specified around new concrete. Avoid straight rock salt on concrete under a year old.
How cold do these work?
The coldest rated products in the line work to -25 F. Check the individual product page, because the rating varies by chemistry.
Why buy an own-label ice melt?
Because we can label it honestly. Every product here says what chemistry it is, what temperature it works to and what surfaces it suits, which is more than most bags on a big box shelf will tell you.
Not sure which chemistry your surface can take? Read the ice melt buying guide, or call or text (856) 418-4895 for a straight answer before the next storm.
