Why Granule Size Matters
Halite is rock salt, and most rock salt fails not because the chemistry is wrong but because the crystals are the wrong size. Too fine and it dissolves on the surface and runs off before it reaches the bond. Too coarse and it sits there for an hour before anything happens. These crystals are graded in between, which is what lets the product work down to -25 F in practice rather than only on paper.

A Note on Surfaces
Halite is a chloride de-icer, so the usual cautions apply. Keep it off concrete that is less than 12 months old, sweep up what lands in planting beds, and rinse it off metal railings and vehicle panels when the thaw comes. If the walkway is new, or the dog uses it every day, the calcium magnesium acetate pails are the gentler option.
How to Apply
- Clear the loose snow first. De-icer is for the bonded layer underneath.
- Spread thinly and evenly, then let it work before you go back over it.
- Shovel the slush away once the bond breaks so it cannot refreeze overnight.
- Reseal the pail between storms to keep the crystals from clumping.
