Description
The Gentle End Of The Ice Melt Range
CMA is calcium magnesium acetate, and it is the de-icer people reach for when the surface or the surroundings matter more than raw melting power. Blended here with magnesium chloride, it melts effectively while being markedly less aggressive than rock salt toward concrete, planting and paws.

What CMA Actually Does Differently

Chloride de-icers work by brute force, driving the freezing point down and taking the surface with them over enough seasons. CMA is an acetate rather than a chloride, and it works partly by preventing ice particles from bonding to each other and to the pavement. That is a gentler mechanism, and it is why CMA costs more per pound.

Where This Is The Right Choice

  • Pavers, natural stone and decorative concrete you do not want pitted
  • Entries where a dog crosses the treated surface every day
  • Beds and lawn edges where runoff lands on planting
  • Small areas where the price per pound matters less than the surface

Gentle Has A Ceiling

CMA blends are the kindest option here, and they are not the coldest. If you regularly see well below zero, a calcium chloride product such as Peladow will keep working when this slows down. Most people are better served buying the gentle product for the patio and a small pail of calcium chloride for the worst nights.
