Peladow Premier Calcium Chloride Ice Melt: How to Use and Rate

Peladow Premier Calcium Chloride Pellets ice melt, 50 lb bag

Polymeric Sand Store Hardscape Experts |

Peladow Premier is a calcium chloride pellet snow and ice melter made by OxyChem (Occidental Chemical Corporation). It is the product you reach for when the forecast drops well below freezing: OxyChem rates it to keep working down to -25°F, and it comes as white, round pellets in a 50 lb bag. It suits homeowners with long driveways and walks, property managers, and anyone who needs ice gone early on a cold morning.

The catch is the surface. OxyChem does not recommend calcium chloride on masonry or stone, which matters a lot on a hardscape property. This guide covers what Peladow Premier is, how cold it works, where OxyChem says you can and cannot use it, how to spread it, and how far a bag goes, using figures from the Peladow product page and the OxyChem product information sheet.

Quick answer

  • Peladow Premier is calcium chloride in round pellets, sold in a 50 lb bag, rated by OxyChem to work down to -25°F (-32°C).
  • Application rate: 28 lb per 1,000 sq ft, or 4 oz per square yard. A 50 lb bag covers about 1,800 sq ft at that rate.
  • OxyChem says it is safe when properly applied on concrete at least one year old, composite decking and grass.
  • Not recommended on wood, masonry or stone, so check the surface before you spread it on a patio or walkway.

What Peladow Premier is

Peladow Premier Calcium Chloride Pellets are a calcium chloride deicer. Here are its headline traits as the product page and OxyChem describe them:

Trait What the source says
Ingredient Calcium chloride
Lowest working temperature -25°F, or -32°C
How it melts Exothermic: significant heat is released as the pellets dissolve, which speeds up the melt
Pellet shape Round, so the pellets bore down through ice and break the bond with the pavement faster than flat or crystal shaped melters, per OxyChem
Melt speed OxyChem rates it up to 3 times faster than competing materials, across a wide temperature range
Package 50 lb bag

The product page explains why calcium chloride holds up in real cold. Plain rock salt stops doing useful work around 15 to 20°F. Calcium chloride works two ways instead: it drops the freezing point far lower, and dissolving it releases heat, so it attacks the ice from underneath rather than waiting for sun.

Where to use it (and where not to)

This is the section to read before you buy. OxyChem's surface guidance, as given on the product page:

  • Concrete at least one year old. Safe when applied properly. New concrete has not cured enough for any deicer.
  • Composite decking and grass. Safe when properly applied.
  • Wood. Not recommended on decking boards, steps or thresholds.
  • Masonry or stone. Not recommended. On a hardscape patio or a bluestone walkway, read this before you spread any pellets.

Note the exact wording: "safe when properly applied." That means at the listed rate and following the label, not a blanket promise for any amount on any surface. Calcium chloride goes further than rock salt, and the product page points out that over applying is both wasteful and harder on surfaces.

If your walks are pavers or natural stone and you want something gentler, the product page suggests looking at our magnesium chloride and CMA blended products, such as CMA Blended Magnesium Chloride Ice Melt. They do not go as cold, and that is the trade. Our ice melt buying guide and the article on the best ice melt for sidewalks, driveways and hardscape walk through the options. Not sure which fits your surface? Call (856) 418-4895 and tell us what the surface is.

The Peladow product page makes no pet claim either way. If dogs use the walk, see our guide to identifying ice melt for homes with dogs and read the label of any product you consider.

How to use Peladow Premier

The product page's advice is short: spread thin and let it work. In order:

  1. Check the surface. Confirm it is concrete at least one year old, composite decking or grass, and not wood, masonry or stone.
  2. Know the area. The rate is given per 1,000 sq ft, so know roughly how many square feet you are treating before you start.
  3. Spread a thin, even layer. Apply at 28 lb per 1,000 sq ft, which is 4 oz per square yard. Do not pile it on; more pellets waste product and are harder on surfaces.
  4. Let it work. The pellets release heat as they dissolve and bore down through the ice to break its bond with the pavement, so give them time before you shovel or scrape.
  5. Follow the label directions. The bag label is the final word on how much to use and how to handle the product.

How much Peladow Premier you need

OxyChem's rate gives you everything you need to plan:

Measure Figure
Rate 28 lb per 1,000 sq ft
Equivalent 4 oz per square yard
Coverage per 50 lb bag About 1,800 sq ft at the recommended rate

To estimate, divide your area in square feet by 1,000 and multiply by 28 to get pounds per application, then compare that with the roughly 1,800 sq ft a bag covers. Remember that each storm is a new application, so plan for the number of storms you expect, not just one. Frequently asked questions

How cold does Peladow Premier work?

OxyChem rates Peladow Premier to work down to -25°F, or -32°C. The product page notes that plain rock salt stops doing useful work around 15 to 20°F.

How much Peladow do I spread per 1,000 sq ft?

28 lb per 1,000 sq ft, which equals 4 oz per square yard. At that rate a 50 lb bag covers about 1,800 sq ft. Follow the label directions for your conditions.

Can I use Peladow on pavers or natural stone?

OxyChem does not recommend calcium chloride on masonry or stone. If your patio or walkway is pavers or natural stone, call us at (856) 418-4895 and we will help you pick a different product.

Can I use it on new concrete?

OxyChem's guidance is concrete at least one year old, where it is safe when applied properly. New concrete has not cured enough for any deicer.

Why are the pellets round?
