Choosing ice melt for a sidewalk, driveway or paver patio comes down to two things: how cold it actually gets where you are, and what the surface is made of. Get the second one wrong and you can do permanent damage to concrete that no amount of cleaning will reverse.
Chloride based de-icers are the ones that damage concrete. Not the other way around. Rock salt, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are all chlorides, and they drive the freeze and thaw cycling that causes surface scaling, the flaky spalled look you see on older driveways. They also accumulate in soil and are hard on paws.
That does not mean never use them. It means match the chemistry to the surface and the temperature, and know what the tradeoff is.

Nothing works at every temperature. If a product claims it does, be sceptical. Calcium chloride is the coldest working common de-icer at roughly -25 F, and CMA, the gentlest option, stops being effective around 20 F.
Concrete poured within the last 12 months should see no chloride de-icer at all. It has not fully cured, it is more porous, and salt exposure in that first winter causes scaling that shows up as a rough, pitted surface within a season or two. There is no repair short of resurfacing.
