Gator Eurostone Bond Polymeric Sand: Natural Stone Joint Guide

Alliance Gator Eurostone Bond Polymeric Sand for Natural Stone 50 lb bag in Slate Grey

Polymeric Sand Store Hardscape Experts |

Gator Eurostone Bond is the natural stone specialist in the Alliance jointing line. Standard paver polymeric sand is designed around tight, uniform 1/8 in joints, and natural stone does not give you those. Alliance graded and formulated Eurostone Bond for the wide, uneven joints that flagstone, bluestone and mixed fieldstone produce, rating it for joints up to 1-1/2 in wide in a single Slate Grey color chosen to read as a mortar joint against the stone.

This guide covers what Eurostone Bond is rated for, the surfaces Alliance approves and rules out, the installation sequence, coverage per 50 lb bag and the warranty, using figures from the Alliance Gator Eurostone Bond product page and the Alliance technical data sheet dated June 2, 2025. Anything the product page does not state, we leave to the data sheet in our TDS and SDS library.

What Gator Eurostone Bond is

Alliance Gator Eurostone Bond Polymeric Sand is a water-activated polymeric jointing sand made for the reality of flagstone work. Here is how Alliance positions it against a standard paver polymeric sand:

Feature Standard paver polymeric sand Gator Eurostone Bond
Designed around Tight, uniform 1/8 in paver joints Wide, uneven natural stone joints, rated to 1-1/2 in (3.8 cm)
Gradation Varies by product ASTM C144, the recognized mortar sand standard, so it packs a wide joint without bridging or voiding
Color range Usually two or more colors Slate Grey only, which reads as a mortar joint against bluestone, slate and mixed fieldstone
Set temperature Varies by product Above 32°F (0°C), which extends the season into the shoulder months
Rain safe Varies by product 1 hour after water activation on traditional installs, 24 hours on overlays
Packaging Varies 50 lb (22.7 kg) bags

Alliance says the 1-1/2 in rating covers the great majority of irregular flagstone and bluestone layouts without a second product.

Where to use it (and where not to)

Alliance lists Eurostone Bond for:

  • Irregular flagstone patios with variable joint widths
  • Bluestone and slate patios, walkways and pool decks
  • Mixed fieldstone and dry laid natural stone
  • Cut natural stone with joints wider than a standard paver product can handle
  • Overlay applications over existing concrete, using the 24 hour rain safe window
  • Natural stone steps and landings
  • Wet cast stone with irregular joint geometry

The manufacturer's limits, straight from Alliance:

  • Not recommended for clay pavers. Alliance states this directly.
  • Do not use on asphalt.
  • Do not apply to a damp or wet surface. The stone and joints must be dry before you sweep the sand in, or you will stain the surface.
  • Not suitable over a bedding layer with large voids. If the aggregate underneath has open voids, the sand will keep migrating down and the joint will never hold.
  • Joints less than 1-1/2 in deep do not have enough depth for the product to lock. Deepen the joint or choose a different system.

Joint width is the other hard limit. Alliance caps Eurostone Bond at 1-1/2 in. If your flagstone joints run wider, the Alliance options are Gator Maxx G2 for joints up to 4 in on a traditional base, or Gator Dust Bond, a polymeric stone dust for pedestrian flagstone joints up to 6 in. For a concrete paver patio, Alliance points to Gator Maxx G2 or Gator Nitro X as the better fit, since you do not need a natural stone formulation there. Our guide on polymeric sand for flagstone and natural stone compares the options across brands.

How to install Gator Eurostone Bond

Read the Alliance TDS before you start. Work above 32°F on stone that is completely dry. This is the shape of the job as Alliance describes it:

  1. Confirm everything is dry. The stone and the joints must be completely dry. Any surface moisture at this stage causes staining.
  2. Sweep the sand in. Use a hard bristle broom and work the sand fully to the bottom of the joint.
  3. Vibrate. Run a plate compactor over the surface, using a rubber pad to protect the stone face.
  4. Top up and sweep off. Refill any joints that dropped, then sweep every last grain off the stone surface. Leftover sand on the face is what causes haze. Bring the final sand level to at least 1/8 in below the top of the stone.
  5. Water activate in sections. Start at the low point of the patio and work in manageable sections, showering a minimum of 90 seconds per 50 sq ft.

Keep foot traffic off through the initial set. Traditional installs are rain safe after 1 hour; overlay installs need 24 hours. For the errors that cause haze and cracking with any water-activated sand, see polymeric sand installation mistakes.

How much Gator Eurostone Bond you need

Alliance gives two coverage figures per 50 lb bag. The narrow joint figure assumes tight, consistent gaps; the wide joint figure assumes the irregular flagstone layouts most people are actually installing.

Joint type Coverage per 50 lb bag
Narrow joints Approximately 71 to 87 sq ft
Wide joints Approximately 24 to 45 sq ft

Coverage on natural stone swings hard with joint width and depth. If your joints are genuinely 1 in or wider across the whole patio, plan on the low end, and note that wide irregular flagstone joints can eat three times the sand of a tight layout. Measure your square footage, be honest about your joints, and use the wide joint figure if in doubt. Our polymeric sand calculator will size it, or call (856) 418-4895. To see the color against your own stone first, a Eurostone Bond color sample is available.

Warranty and testing

Alliance backs Eurostone Bond with a 15 year limited warranty for residential use. The sand is graded to ASTM C144, the recognized mortar sand standard. Alliance does not recommend it for clay pavers, and the product page does not list a commercial warranty term.

The Alliance technical data sheet for Eurostone Bond, dated June 2, 2025, is listed in our TDS and SDS library. If any haze does show up after activation, Alliance pairs the product with its efflorescence and slurry cleaner, and with Gator Hybrid Seal once the joints have fully cured. Our guide on removing polymeric sand haze covers the cleanup steps.

Frequently asked questions

Will Eurostone Bond work in a 2 in joint?

No. Alliance caps Eurostone Bond at 1-1/2 in wide. Beyond that you are outside the rated range, and Gator Maxx G2 or Gator Dust Bond is the Alliance product to look at.

Is there a color other than Slate Grey?

No. Eurostone Bond is produced in Slate Grey only. Alliance chose it because grey reads as a mortar joint against bluestone, slate and mixed fieldstone.

How cold can I install it?

It sets above 32°F (0°C). Below freezing, stop. Our guide on polymeric sand temperature limits compares minimums by product.

Does it stain bluestone?

Not when installed dry and swept completely clean before water activation. Sand left on the stone face during activation is the cause of nearly every haze complaint.

Can I use it over an existing concrete slab?

Yes. Alliance lists overlay applications over existing concrete, using the 24 hour rain safe window rather than the 1 hour window for traditional installs.
