SRW SimplyTough Polymeric Sand: No Time Limit Install Guide

SRW SimplyTough Polymeric Sand 50 lb bag

Polymeric Sand Store Hardscape Experts |

SRW SimplyTough is the SRW Products polymeric sand for people who do not want to race a stopwatch. Most polymeric sands must be watered on a deadline once you begin activating, and losing that race means haze, weak joints or both. SRW built SimplyTough with no activation time limit: keep the surface wet and you can work areas up to 500 sq ft at a time. The formula also leaves out the Portland cement, fly ash and crushed limestone that cause hazing, and it is sold in 50 lb bags in Tan and Granite.

This guide covers what SimplyTough is rated for, the surfaces SRW lists and the uses it excludes, the five step installation sequence, coverage per bag and the common questions, using figures from the SRW SimplyTough product page and technical data sheet.

Quick answer

  • SimplyTough is a haze free, dust free polymeric sand in 50 lb bags, available in Tan and Granite.
  • No activation time limit. Keep the surface wet and work up to 500 sq ft at a time.
  • Listed for concrete pavers, natural stone, porcelain tile and concrete overlays on driveways, walkways, patios and pool decks. Not for clay pavers or pool copings.
  • Temperatures must stay above 32°F throughout installation and curing. Per the SRW data sheet, a 50 lb bag covers 55 to 75 sq ft of narrow joints or 25 to 35 sq ft of wide joints.

What SRW SimplyTough is

SRW SimplyTough Polymeric Sand is a dry, water activated jointing sand. The difference is in how forgiving the watering step is and what SRW left out of the blend:

Feature Typical polymeric sand SRW SimplyTough
Activation watering Must be completed on a deadline once you start No time limit, as long as the surface stays wet
Section size Small sections so the water step is not outrun Up to 500 sq ft at a time
Haze risk Portland cement, fly ash or crushed limestone can leave a white haze None of those three ingredients in the formula
Dust Loose fines cloud up when the bag is opened or swept Admix is lightly bonded to the sand, so it will not dust when opened or swept
Packaging Usually 50 lb bags 50 lb bags, Tan or Granite

SRW describes the cured joint as tough: it resists sand loss, weeds and insects, and stays flexible. If you want the background on why the Portland free formula matters, read our explainer on what causes white haze on pavers.

SimplyTough or Pavermate Z3? Both are SRW polymeric sands with the same Portland free, haze free approach, so the choice comes down to the surface and the watering step. SRW lists Pavermate Z3 for concrete and clay pavers with joints from 1/16 in to 2 in, rain safe 10 minutes after activation, but not for porcelain tile or flagstone. SimplyTough is listed for porcelain tile and natural stone as well as concrete pavers, and gives you the no time limit watering, but SRW excludes clay pavers. If your patio is clay, use Z3; if it is porcelain or you want an unhurried activation step, SimplyTough is the one.

The SRW product page does not publish a joint width range, a rain safe time or a cure time for SimplyTough, so we do not state them here. For those figures, check the manufacturer data sheet in our TDS and SDS library. SRW notes that actual color varies by geographic location and that every monitor shows color differently, so compare the SimplyTough color samples on your own stone before ordering full bags. Jointing material is permanent once cured.

Where to use it (and where not to)

SRW Products recommends SimplyTough for residential and commercial jointing work on:

  • Concrete pavers and natural stone
  • Porcelain tile
  • Driveways, walkways, patios and pool decks
  • Concrete overlays

SRW rules out two uses: SimplyTough is not for use on clay pavers or pool copings. If your project is clay, look at SRW Pavermate Z3, which SRW lists for concrete and clay pavers, or call (856) 418-4895 and describe the job. Temperatures must remain above 32°F throughout installation and curing, so plan around the forecast; our guide on polymeric sand temperature limits explains why that matters.

How to install SRW SimplyTough

The full step by step procedure is in the SRW technical data sheet. This is the shape of the job as SRW lays it out on the product page. Keep temperatures above 32°F through installation and curing, and always test in a small, discrete area first.

  1. Dry. Start with a dry surface and dry joints.
  2. Sweep. Sweep SimplyTough into the joints, compact, and top up until the joints are filled to 1/8 in below the top of the paver.
  3. Clean. Clean the surface completely. The formula will not dust, so this pass is quick.
  4. Wet. Wet the joints thoroughly. There is no time limit: keep the surface wet and work up to 500 sq ft at a time.
  5. Cure. Keep traffic off per the bag directions while the joints cure.

SRW's handling advice is standard for a polymeric sand: wear gloves and eye protection, follow the label, and keep the product away from children and pets until it is placed or cured. Full precautions are in the SDS. For general technique that applies to any water activated sand, see our list of installation mistakes that cause haze and cracks.

Frequently asked questions

What does "no time constraint" actually mean?

Ordinary polymeric sand must be watered on a deadline once you start. SimplyTough has none: keep the surface wet and work at your own pace, up to 500 sq ft at a time.

Is SimplyTough rated for porcelain?

Yes. SRW lists porcelain tile among SimplyTough's applications, alongside concrete pavers and natural stone.

Can I use SimplyTough on clay pavers?

No. SRW says it is not for use on clay pavers or pool copings. For clay, call us and we will point you to the right sand.

When can I seal over SimplyTough?

Let the joints fully cure before cleaning and sealing. SRW does not publish a specific number on the product page; our rule of thumb is 28 days. Our guide on how to seal pavers covers the rest of the sequence.

Does SimplyTough dust when you open the bag?

SRW says no. The admix is lightly bonded to the sand, so it will not dust when opened or swept, which also makes the surface cleanup pass before watering quick.
