Gator Rust Remover is Alliance's spot treatment for the orange stains that show up on pavers and stone. That staining usually comes from one of three places: a metal object left on the surface, sprinkler water high in iron, or fertilizer granules that got wet. Alliance says Gator Rust Remover handles all three, ready to use and with no muriatic acid. It is for homeowners and contractors cleaning up concrete pavers, wet cast and natural stone.
Rust does not wash off, and pressure washing just spreads it. This guide covers what the product removes, the surfaces Alliance lists, the application steps in Alliance's order, why the treated spot can look different afterwards, and the safety points, using figures from the Alliance Gator Rust Remover technical data sheet and our product page.
Quick answer
- Gator Rust Remover removes spots caused by steel, water buildup and fertilizer from concrete pavers, wet cast and natural stone.
- It comes ready to use in a 1 quart (946 ml) bottle. No dilution, and Alliance states it contains no muriatic acid.
- Apply to the stain, soak 2 to 3 minutes, scrub with a hard bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, and repeat until the stain dissolves. Do not let it dry on the surface.
- Afterwards, Alliance recommends cleaning the whole surface with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner so the color stays uniform.
What Gator Rust Remover is
Alliance Gator Rust Remover is a chemical spot cleaner. Our product page puts it simply: rust needs a chemical that converts the iron oxide, which is what this does in two or three minutes. Its headline traits:

| Form | Ready to use, applied as supplied |

Where to use it (and where not to)
Alliance rates Gator Rust Remover for:
- Rust spots from steel furniture, tools or rebar
- Orange staining from irrigation water
- Fertilizer burn marks on pavers
- Concrete pavers, wet cast and natural stone
The limits and cautions Alliance gives:
- Do not let the product dry on the paver surface. Work in manageable spots so you can scrub and rinse within the soak window.
- Test a small area first, as the product page advises, before treating a stain in the middle of a patio.
- It is a rust remover, not a general cleaner. For oil, use Gator XP Oil and Grease Remover. For general ground in dirt, use Gator Shampoo paver cleaner.
Here is how the Gator cleaners mentioned on our product page line up by job:
| Job | Gator product |
|---|---|
| Orange spots from steel, iron rich water or fertilizer | Gator Rust Remover, spot applied |
| Oil rather than rust | Gator XP Oil and Grease Remover |
| General ground in dirt | Gator Shampoo paver cleaner |
| Whole surface follow up clean after spot treating | Gator Efflorescence Cleaner |

How to use Gator Rust Remover
These are Alliance's steps. Follow the label directions and the current data sheet, and wear goggles and rubber gloves throughout.
- Apply the product directly onto the stain, as supplied. No dilution.
- Soak for 2 to 3 minutes. Do not let it dry on the surface.
- Scrub with a hard bristle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly with water.
- Repeat until the stain has dissolved.
Why the treated spot can look different afterwards
This catches people out. The rust comes off, and now you have one very clean patch in the middle of a patio that has weathered for years. Alliance's own guidance is to follow up by cleaning the entire surface with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner, otherwise the treated patch can end up a different shade from the rest. Doing the whole patio also gets rid of the dirt you had stopped noticing.
If you plan to seal, this is the right order anyway: spot treat stains, clean everything, dry 48 hours, then seal. Our guides on how to clean pavers before sealing and how to seal pavers walk through the rest of that sequence.
How much Gator Rust Remover you need
Alliance does not publish a coverage figure for this product, because it is a spot treatment applied directly to staining rather than across an area. How far a quart goes depends entirely on how much staining you have and how many repeat applications a stubborn stain takes. For the manufacturer's current guidance, check the data sheet in our TDS and SDS library.
If you only have a spot or two, or want to test first, we carry a Gator Rust Remover 8 oz sample. For larger jobs, call (856) 418-4895 and we will talk through quantity with you.

Frequently asked questions
What causes rust stains on pavers?
Usually steel left in contact with the surface, irrigation water with a high iron content, or fertilizer granules that got wet.
How long do I leave Gator Rust Remover on?
Two to three minutes, then scrub with a hard bristle brush and rinse thoroughly. Do not let it dry on the surface, and repeat until the stain has dissolved.
Does it contain acid?
Alliance states it contains no muriatic acid. It does not publish a full chemistry classification, so wear goggles and rubber gloves as directed.
Can I use it on natural stone?
Yes. Concrete pavers, wet cast and natural stone are all listed by Alliance. Test a small area first.
Why does my patio look patchy after treating a stain?
Because one spot was cleaned and the rest was not. Alliance recommends cleaning the whole surface with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner afterwards so the color is uniform.
