Rust-Oleum RockSolid Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain, Tint Base, 1 Gal
What You Need to Do Before You Can Use It
Take the can to a paint retailer with a tinting machine and have it tinted to your chosen colour. Rust-Oleum’s own wording is to customize the tint base to the colour of your choice, and they note that only one tint base is required to create the whole range. Colours include Charcoal Gray, Dark Granite, Limestone, Quarry Stone, Sahara, Saltillo, Sienna, Red Rock, Driftwood, Pewter, Patina and two dozen more.
What It Is
A water based acrylic emulsion stain with inorganic oxide pigments, for bare interior and exterior horizontal concrete. Semi transparent means it deliberately lets the character of the concrete show through, giving a marbleized, acid stain look rather than a flat painted colour. Colours can be layered for a multi tone effect.

The Preparation Is Most of the Work
- New concrete must cure at least 28 days.
- Existing sealers and coatings must be removed. Sprinkle water on the slab. If it beads, there is a sealer present and it has to come off by grinding or abrasive blasting.
- The slab needs etching with a concrete etch, then rinsing three times with clean water.
- Apply with a pump sprayer as a fine mist from 10 to 12 inches, in sections of about six feet by six feet.
- Do not pour it on the slab or let it puddle.
Limits Rust-Oleum States
- Not intended for garage floors or asphalt.
- Do not thin.
- Do not apply in direct sunlight, or if rain is expected within 48 hours.
- Avoid applying late in the day when temperatures are falling, since dew interferes with curing.
- The stain alone does not protect the slab. A film forming concrete sealer over the top is required for resistance to water, chemicals and UV. Budget for both products.
