Woven Reinforcement Fabric, 200 lbf at 15% Stretch

GF5 is the reinforcement grade: 200 lbf grab tensile at only 15 percent elongation. Non-woven fabrics stretch 75 to 80 percent before they take load; a woven takes it almost immediately, which is what stabilizes a base over poor or clay soil.

Why Contractors Ask for Gator Fabric GF5 by Name

On soft or clay ground the problem is not filtration, it is that the base has nothing to push against. A high-modulus woven takes tension straight away and spreads the load.

  • 200 lbf (890 N) grab tensile in both directions, ASTM D4632.
  • Only 15 percent elongation at break, against 75 to 80 percent for the non-wovens. That low stretch is the whole point.
  • 4.0 oz per sq yd (136 gsm) woven polypropylene yarns. Note the grade number tracks the strength class, not the weight.
  • Built for load, not flow: driveways, pathways, sidewalks and retaining wall toes.
  • Leveling pad reinforcement under retaining wall foundations.

Gator Fabric GF5 Specifications

Where Gator Fabric GF5 Works

Alliance rates GF5 for:

  • Driveways, pathways and sidewalks
  • Retaining wall toe walls and leveling pads
  • Poor and clay soil foundation reinforcement
  • Soil stabilization and separation
  • Permeable foundations

Installation and Selection Notes (Straight From the Manufacturer)

Overlap every seam by a minimum of 12 in (30 cm). A butted seam is a failure point.

Lay it over leveled, compacted soil within a 3/8 in (10 mm) tolerance, and stretch it so there are no folds or wrinkles under the aggregate.

A woven has low flow-through compared with a non-woven. Choose it for load spreading, not for drainage. If you need water to move through the layer, use GF3.5 or GF4.4.

How to Install Gator Fabric GF5

The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Excavate and compact the subgrade to within 3/8 in.
  2. Roll the fabric out flat, and stretch out every wrinkle. Wrinkles concentrate stress.
  3. Overlap seams by at least 12 in.
  4. Place base aggregate directly on top and compact as normal.

Woven or Non-Woven? The Decision in One Line

Woven for strength under load. Non-woven for water moving through.

  • Soft or clay subgrade under a driveway β€” woven GF5. It takes tension at 15 percent stretch and spreads the wheel load.
  • French drain, wall backfill, anywhere water must pass β€” non-woven GF3.5 or GF4.4.
  • Under Gator Base panels β€” GF4.4, which Alliance specifies by name.
  • Weed control in a planting bed β€” GF20 Polyspun, and none of the above.

Quick Answers

Why is it called GF5 if it is 4 oz?
The number tracks its 200 lbf strength class rather than the weight. Alliance publishes 4.0 oz per sq yd on the data sheet.

What does 15 percent elongation mean in practice?
It reaches full strength almost immediately under load rather than stretching first. That is what makes it a reinforcement fabric.

Can I use it for drainage?
It is not the right choice. A woven passes far less water than a non-woven. Use GF3.5 or GF4.4 where flow matters.

Can I use it under a retaining wall?
Yes, Alliance lists retaining wall toe walls and leveling pads as intended applications.

How much overlap?
Minimum 12 in on every seam.
