The Non-Woven Grade Alliance Specifies Under Gator Base

GF4.4 is the heavier separation and filtration geotextile: 4.4 oz, 120 lbf grab tensile and 135 gal/min/sq ft of flow. It is the grade named in every Gator Base cross-section and under Gator X-Turf, and the one to use behind retaining walls.

Why Contractors Ask for Gator Fabric GF4.4 by Name

If you are installing Gator Base panels, this is not a preference, it is the spec. Alliance names GF4.4 in step 3 of their own installation sequence and labels it on every diagram.

  • The Gator Base fabric. Alliance step 3: cover the excavated area and sides with Gator Fabric GF4.4.
  • 4.4 oz per sq yd (150 gsm) needle-punched non-woven polypropylene, hydrophilic treated.
  • 120 lbf (535 N) grab tensile in both directions, ASTM D4632, at 75 to 80 percent elongation.
  • 135 gal/min/sq ft flow. High enough to keep a drainage layer working while it separates.
  • Also the geotextile under Gator X-Turf.
  • Five roll sizes from a 3 ft handroll to a 12 ft x 400 ft contractor roll.

Where Gator Fabric GF4.4 Works

Alliance rates GF4.4 for:

  • Under Gator Base panels, the specified grade
  • Under Gator X-Turf artificial grass
  • Behind retaining walls
  • Paver sub-base foundations
  • Drainage control and erosion protection
  • Soil separation on soft or clay subgrade

Installation Requirements (Straight From the Manufacturer)

Overlap every seam by a minimum of 12 in (30 cm). A butted seam is a failure point.

Lay it over leveled, compacted soil within a 3/8 in (10 mm) tolerance, and stretch it so there are no folds or wrinkles under the aggregate.

How to Install Gator Fabric GF4.4

The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Level and compact the subgrade to within 3/8 in, sloped for drainage.
  2. Roll the fabric out across the area and up the sides of the excavation.
  3. Overlap seams by at least 12 in and stretch the fabric so no folds remain.
  4. Place your bedding layer on top: 3/4 in of sand compacted to 1/2 in, or ASTM No. 9 stone which needs no compaction.

GF3.5, GF4.4, GF5 or GF20? Picking the Right Gator Fabric

The grade numbers are not all weights, which trips people up. Here is what actually separates them:

  • GF20 Polyspun β€” 3 oz, 60 lbf. A weed barrier. The "20" is the warranty, not the weight. Not a base fabric.
  • GF3.5 Non-Woven β€” 3.5 oz, 80 lbf, 165 gal/min/sq ft. The light separation and drainage grade.
  • GF4.4 Non-Woven β€” 4.4 oz, 120 lbf, 135 gal/min/sq ft. The heavier grade, and the one specified under Gator Base.
  • GF5 Woven β€” 4.0 oz but 200 lbf at only 15 percent elongation. Reinforcement under load, not filtration.

Quick Answers

Which fabric goes under Gator Base?
GF4.4. Alliance names it in the installation steps and on every diagram in the Gator Base data sheet.

How much do I overlap the seams?
A minimum of 12 in (30 cm).

What is the difference from GF3.5?
GF4.4 is heavier at 4.4 oz against 3.5, and stronger at 120 lbf grab tensile against 80. GF3.5 flows slightly more water.

Can I use it behind a retaining wall?
Yes, Alliance lists that as an intended application.

Is it the right fabric under artificial turf?
Yes. Alliance specifies GF4.4 as the geotextile beneath Gator X-Turf.

Do I need to compact the bedding on top?
If you use sand, yes: spread 3/4 in and compact to 1/2 in. ASTM No. 9 stone needs no compaction.
