Why Contractors Ask for Gator Fabric GF3.5 by Name
Base stone migrating into soft subgrade is what makes a patio sink. A non-woven separator stops the two mixing while still letting water through, and GF3.5 lets more through than any other Gator fabric.
- 165 gal/min/sq ft water flow, the highest of the Gator fabric range.
- 3.5 oz per sq yd (120 gsm) needle-punched non-woven polypropylene, hydrophilic treated for flow.
- 80 lbf (360 N) grab tensile both directions, ASTM D4632.
- Separation plus drainage in one layer.
- Five roll sizes from a 3 ft handroll to 12 ft x 400 ft.

Where Gator Fabric GF3.5 Works
Alliance rates GF3.5 for:
- Patios, walkways and staircases
- Low retaining walls
- Garden and hardscape covering
- Drainage control and erosion protection
- Paving underlay and soil separation
Installation Requirements (Straight From the Manufacturer)
Overlap every seam by a minimum of 12 in (30 cm). A butted seam is a failure point.
Lay it over leveled, compacted soil within a 3/8 in (10 mm) tolerance, and stretch it so there are no folds or wrinkles under the aggregate.

How to Install Gator Fabric GF3.5
The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:
- Level and compact the subgrade to within 3/8 in.
- Roll the fabric out over the area and up the sides.
- Overlap seams by at least 12 in and stretch out every fold.
- Place and compact your base aggregate on top as normal.
GF3.5 or GF4.4?
Both are non-woven separators from the same family. The trade is strength against flow:
- GF3.5 — 3.5 oz, 80 lbf, 165 gal/min/sq ft. More flow, lighter, less money.
- GF4.4 — 4.4 oz, 120 lbf, 135 gal/min/sq ft. Half again the strength, and the grade specified under Gator Base and Gator X-Turf.
- Light residential patio on decent soil, GF3.5 is enough. Gator Base, turf, wall backfill or soft clay, use GF4.4.
Quick Answers
What does a separation fabric actually do?
It keeps base aggregate and subgrade soil apart. Without it, stone migrates down into soft soil, the base thins, and the surface settles.
How much overlap on the seams?
Minimum 12 in (30 cm).
Can I use it under Gator Base?
Alliance specifies GF4.4 there, not GF3.5. Use the heavier grade for that.
Is it a weed barrier?
It will suppress weeds, but GF20 Polyspun is the product Alliance sells for that job and it costs less.
Which way up does it go?
Non-woven geotextile has no orientation. Just keep it flat and unwrinkled.
