Why Contractors Ask for Gator Fabric GF20 by Name
A weed barrier has an easy job compared with a base fabric, and paying base-fabric money for it is a waste. GF20 is the grade that suits a planting bed.

This is not a base fabric. Alliance does not specify GF20 for paver base, Gator Base or wall reinforcement. It is the weakest of the four Gator fabrics.
For anything structural use GF3.5, GF4.4 or the woven GF5.

How to Install Gator Fabric GF20
The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:
- Clear the bed of existing weeds and level the soil.
- Roll the fabric out and cut around plantings.
- Overlap seams and pin the edges so nothing lifts.
- Cover with mulch or stone promptly. Even a UV stabilized fabric lasts longer covered.
Why Weed Fabric Gets a Bad Reputation
It usually fails for one of three reasons, none of them the fabric's fault:
- Weeds grow on top, not through. Organic mulch breaks down into soil sitting above the fabric, and seeds germinate in that. Fabric cannot stop it.
- It was left uncovered. UV is what destroys landscape fabric. Mulch it promptly.
- Wrong grade for the job. Under a gravel path taking foot traffic, a 3 oz weed barrier is under-specified. Use GF3.5.
- Refreshing the mulch every couple of seasons does more for weed control than any fabric.
