ROMEX Ecofine Resin Jointing Sand: Pool Deck Install Guide

ROMEX Ecofine Resin Jointing Sand 27.5 lb bucket

Polymeric Sand Store Hardscape Experts |

ROMEX Ecofine is a ready mixed, one component resin jointing sand that hardens on contact with air into a permanent joint. It is made in Germany, cures without a resin film, and is pool chemical tested, which is why ROMEX points to pool decks, patios and pathways as its home turf. It comes in 27.5 lb buckets in three colors and installs with a hose and a squeegee: no blending, no leaf blower, no plate compactor.

This guide covers what Ecofine is, how it differs from a water activated polymeric sand, the joint widths and bases ROMEX specifies, the situations ROMEX rules out, the five step installation, coverage per bucket and the questions we hear most, using figures from the ROMEX Ecofine product page and product data sheet.

Quick answer

  • Ecofine is an air cure, resin film free, water permeable jointing sand in 27.5 lb buckets, in Neutral/Beige, Stone Grey and Basalt/Anthracite.
  • Joint width: greater than 1/8 in on porcelain tile and natural stone, greater than 1/4 in on concrete pavers, over a stable, permeable, compacted base sloped at least 2 percent.
  • Install at surface temperatures between 41°F and 86°F. Light drizzle is fine; protect fresh joints from continuous or heavy rain for about 24 hours.
  • Rated for medium traffic loads under 3.5 metric tons, including driveways. Not for permanently wet areas; for polygonal flagstone, ROMEX recommends its D1 jointing mortar.

What ROMEX Ecofine is

ROMEX Ecofine Resin Jointing Sand is a resin jointing mortar rather than a polymeric sand. It arrives premixed and damp, cures by reacting with air, and forms a harder, more permanent joint. Here is how it compares with a typical water activated polymeric sand:

Feature Typical polymeric sand ROMEX Ecofine
How it sets Dry sand, activated with water after it is in the joint Ready mixed, hardens on contact with air
Surface at installation Must be completely dry Prewet thoroughly and watered continuously while jointing
Tools Broom, plate compactor, leaf blower Hose, squeegee and a soft broom; no compacting, no leaf blower
Water through the joint Water sheds off the joint Highly permeable, rated at about 198 inches per hour
Finish on light stone Haze risk if sand is left on the surface Resin film free, no shiny coating or milky haze
Packaging Usually 50 lb bags 27.5 lb (12.5 kg) buckets

ROMEX describes the cured joint as a one time install: it resists ants, weeds and washout, so there is no seasonal sweeping back in. The product is made from 98 percent natural, recycled or renewable raw materials and produced with solar energy in Germany. For the broader category comparison, read polymeric sand vs resin sand.

Colors Neutral/Beige (#1943), Stone Grey (#1944), Basalt/Anthracite (#1945)

ROMEX notes that natural color variation is normal because the product is made from natural raw materials, and a monitor will not show the true shade. The Ecofine color sample kit lets you compare all three colors on your own stone before ordering full buckets. Resin joints are permanent once cured.

Where to use it (and where not to)

ROMEX lists Ecofine as compatible with any paver type and ideal for pool decks, patios and pathways:

  • Porcelain tile and natural stone with joints greater than 1/8 in
  • Concrete pavers with joints greater than 1/4 in
  • Surfaces over a stable, water permeable, well compacted base with a slope of at least 2 percent

Pool decks are where Ecofine is most often used. It is pool chemical tested, so chlorine and saltwater splash are not a problem, and because it stays highly permeable, splash drains through the joints instead of puddling on the surface.

Per the ROMEX data sheet, Ecofine should not be used in permanently wet areas. Slabs under 1-1/4 in thick require bonded construction with the joints filled entirely. The data sheet rates Ecofine for medium traffic loads under 3.5 metric tons (usage category ZTV N2), and ROMEX lists driveways among its uses. For polygonal or irregular flagstone, ROMEX recommends its D1 jointing mortar instead. Not sure your project qualifies? Call (856) 418-4895 before you order and we will give you a straight answer.

How to install ROMEX Ecofine

The full procedure is in the ROMEX product data sheet, available in our TDS and SDS library. This is the shape of the job as ROMEX lays it out. Install at surface temperatures between 41°F and 86°F, wear gloves, boots and eye protection, and rinse tools with water immediately after jointing.

  1. Prep. Confirm a stable, well draining, compacted base. Clean the joints to at least 75 percent of the stone height, ideally 100 percent, and clear the surface of dirt.
  2. Prewet. Soak the surface thoroughly with a hose, especially on porous stone or on warm days. Avoid standing water in the joints.
  3. Pour on. Open the bucket and immediately pour the mortar over the prewet surface in sections.
  4. Work into joints. Use a gentle spray of water and a squeegee to push the material into the joints until they are completely filled, watering continuously with a steady stream. No compacting needed.
  5. Final cleaning. Once the surface has dried, sweep diagonally across the joints with a soft broom until the stone is free of residue, and discard the swept material.

Light drizzle is fine during and after installation, but protect fresh joints from continuous or heavy rain for about 24 hours. Ecofine begins curing on contact with air and the vacuum bag cannot be resealed, so submerge any unused material completely in clean water immediately after use; it keeps that way for up to 6 months depending on conditions. Left exposed to air, it hardens and becomes unusable. A natural odor when the bucket is first opened is normal and dissipates quickly; use it in well ventilated outdoor areas.

How much ROMEX Ecofine you need

Each bucket holds 27.5 lb (12.5 kg) of ready mixed material. Coverage depends on stone size, joint width and joint depth. ROMEX publishes consumption as pounds of material per 10.76 sq ft at a joint depth of 1-1/4 in:

Stone size 1/8 in joints 3/8 in joints
31-1/2 x 15-3/4 in 1.1 lb 4.0 lb
23-1/2 x 23-1/2 in 1.1 lb 3.5 lb
15-3/4 x 15-3/4 in 1.5 lb 5.0 lb
12-1/2 x 9-1/2 in 3.8 lb 7.3 lb
9-1/2 x 6-1/4 in 3.3 lb 9.9 lb
3-1/2 x 4-3/8 in 6.2 lb 18.1 lb

Large stones with narrow joints stretch a bucket much further than small stones with wide joints. For an exact bucket count, use our jointing sand calculator, or call (856) 418-4895 with your square footage, stone size and joint width. Order before our daily cutoff and Ecofine ships same day from our New Jersey warehouse. Local pickup is also available: call first, pick up at 1287 Glassboro Road, Williamstown, NJ 08094.

Warranty and testing

ROMEX publishes strength and permeability data rather than a warranty term on the product page. The cured joint tests at 3,031 psi compressive strength and 1,421 psi bending tensile strength, ROMEX rates its cured jointing products for pressure washing up to 2,000 psi, and the material is pool chemical tested against chlorine and saltwater splash. Water permeability is rated at about 198 inches per hour. For warranty language, check the manufacturer data sheet in our TDS and SDS library.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ecofine the same as polymeric sand?

Not quite. Ecofine is a resin jointing mortar. It arrives premixed and damp, cures by reacting with air rather than just water, and forms a harder, more permanent joint than traditional polymeric sand. No dust, no haze, and no leaf blower step.

Can I use Ecofine around my pool?

Yes. Ecofine is pool chemical tested and is one of the most popular choices for pool decks. It stays highly water permeable, so splash drains through the joints instead of puddling.

Can I use Ecofine on my driveway?

Yes, for medium traffic. The ROMEX data sheet rates Ecofine for loads under 3.5 metric tons (usage category ZTV N2), and the product page lists driveways among its uses. It is walkable after 24 hours and takes full load after 6 days at 68°F. Call (856) 418-4895 and we will walk you through the right setup.

What if I do not use the whole bucket?

Submerge any unused material completely in clean water immediately after use, where it keeps for up to 6 months depending on conditions. The vacuum bag cannot be resealed, and material left exposed to air hardens and becomes unusable.

How should I store unopened buckets?

Unopened, Ecofine has a 24 month shelf life. Keep it out of direct sunlight. It is frost resistant in storage.
