Why Pool Decks and Patios Get ECOFINE

Ordinary jointing sand fails in predictable ways: it washes out in storms, sprouts weeds by midsummer, gives ants a home, and needs sweeping back in every season. ECOFINE was engineered to end that cycle with a single install.

  • Ready mixed. No blending, no measuring, no leaf blower, no plate compactor. Open the bucket and start jointing.
  • Resin film free. Cures without the shiny coating or milky haze that cheaper resin sands leave behind, so porcelain and light colored natural stone keep their natural look.
  • Highly water permeable. Rated at 175 inches per hour, joints let rain and pool splash drain straight through instead of puddling on the surface.
  • Pool chemical tested. Chlorine and saltwater splash are not a problem, which is why pool decks are ECOFINE's home turf.
  • One time install. The cured joint resists ants, weeds, and washout, eliminating the need for replacement or touchups.
  • Eco friendly. Made from 98% natural, recycled, or renewable raw materials and produced with solar energy in Germany.

Coverage: How Many Buckets Do You Need?

Each bucket holds 27.5 lb (12.5 kg) of ready mixed material. Coverage depends on your stone size, joint width, and joint depth. ROMEX's consumption figures below are pounds per 10.76 sq ft at a joint depth of 1 1/4 inches:

Stone size 1/8 inch joints 3/8 inch joints
31 1/2" x 15 3/4" 1.1 lbs 4.0 lbs
23 1/2" x 23 1/2" 1.1 lbs 3.5 lbs
15 3/4" x 15 3/4" 1.5 lbs 5.0 lbs
12 1/2" x 9 1/2" 3.8 lbs 7.3 lbs
9 1/2" x 6 1/4" 3.3 lbs 9.9 lbs
3 1/2" x 4 3/8" 6.2 lbs 18.1 lbs

Large stones with narrow joints stretch a bucket much further than small stones with wide joints. For an exact bucket count, use our free Resin Joint Sand Calculator, or call or text us at (856) 418-4895 with your square footage, stone size, and joint width.

Where ECOFINE Works

ECOFINE is compatible with any paver type and is ideal for pool decks, patios, and pathways:

  • Porcelain tile and natural stone with joints greater than 1/8 inch (3 mm)
  • Concrete pavers with joints greater than 1/4 inch (5 mm)
  • Surfaces over a stable, water permeable, well compacted base with a slope of at least 2%

Where ECOFINE Should NOT Be Used (Straight From the Manufacturer). We would rather tell you this before you buy than argue about it after. Per ROMEX's data sheet, ECOFINE should not be used in permanently wet areas, and slabs under 1 1/4 inches thick require bonded construction with joints filled entirely. Driveways and vehicular areas call for a ROMEX bonded system built on TRASS BED products rather than ECOFINE alone, and for polygonal or irregular flagstone, ROMEX recommends its D1 jointing mortar instead. Not sure if your project qualifies? Call or text us at (856) 418-4895 before you order and we will give you a straight answer, even if the answer is that this is not the right product for your job.

Installation at a Glance

The full step by step guide is in the official data sheet below, and ROMEX has a good installation video. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Prep. Confirm a stable, well draining, compacted base. Clean joints to at least 75% of stone height, ideally 100%, and clear the surface of dirt.
  2. Pre-wet. Soak the surface thoroughly with a hose, especially porous stone or on warm days. Avoid standing water in the joints.
  3. Pour on. Open the bucket and immediately pour the mortar over the pre-wet surface in sections.
  4. Work into joints. Use a gentle spray of water and a squeegee to push the material into the joints until completely filled, watering continuously with a steady stream. No compacting needed.
  5. Final cleaning. Once the surface has dried, sweep diagonally across the joints with a soft broom until the stone is free of residue, and discard the swept material.

Install at surface temperatures between 41Β°F and 86Β°F. Light drizzle is fine during and after installation, but protect fresh joints from continuous or heavy rain for about 24 hours. Wear gloves, boots, and eye protection, and rinse tools with water immediately after jointing.

Pick Your Color With Confidence

ECOFINE is available in Neutral/Beige (#1943), Stone Grey (#1944), and Basalt/Anthracite (#1945). ROMEX notes in their own documentation that natural color variation is normal because the product is made from natural raw materials, and screens make it worse: every monitor shows color differently.

Not 100% sure which color matches your stone? Order our ECOFINE Color Sample Kit first. You get real 2 ounce samples of all three colors, filled by us from the same factory sealed buckets on this page, so you can compare them on your actual stone before buying full buckets. Resin joints are permanent once cured. A few dollars of certainty is cheap.

Quick Answers

Is ECOFINE the same as polymeric sand?
Not quite. ECOFINE is a resin jointing mortar. It arrives pre-mixed and damp, cures by reacting with air rather than just water, and forms a harder, more permanent joint than traditional polymeric sand. No dust, no haze, and no leaf blower step.

Can I use it around my pool?
Yes. ECOFINE is pool chemical tested and is one of the most popular choices for pool decks. It stays highly water permeable, so splash drains through the joints instead of puddling.

Can I use it on my driveway?
Vehicle traffic requires a ROMEX bonded system built on TRASS BED products rather than ECOFINE alone. Call or text us at (856) 418-4895 and we will walk you through the right setup.

What if I do not use the whole bucket?
ECOFINE begins curing on contact with air and the vacuum bag cannot be resealed. Submerge any unused material completely in clean water immediately after use, where it keeps for up to 6 months depending on conditions. Left exposed to air, it hardens and becomes unusable.

How should I store unopened buckets?
Unopened, ECOFINE has a 24 month shelf life. Keep it out of direct sunlight. It is frost resistant in storage.

Does it smell?
A natural odor is normal when the bucket is first opened and dissipates quickly. Use it in well ventilated outdoor areas.

How strong is the cured joint?
Compressive strength of 3,031 psi with bending tensile strength of 1,421 psi, and ROMEX rates its cured jointing products for pressure washing at up to 2,000 psi.
