None of the manufacturer data sheets we work from publishes a service life in years. What they do publish is limited warranty terms and a list of installation conditions, and those conditions are the clearest guide to what makes a joint last.

How long does polymeric sand last, according to manufacturers?
The closest thing to a published lifespan is the warranty term. Here is what the data sheets for several sands we carry say.

Read the conditions carefully. Alliance's warranty requires a base of at least 6 in of compacted 0 to 3/4 in crushed stone, a bedding sand layer no thicker than 1 in, and proper edging, and it excludes removal or reinstallation costs. Techniseal's warranty on HP NextGel depends on installation per the packaging, the data sheet and ICPI Tech Specs 2, 10 and 20. A warranty is a statement about the product, not a promise about any particular patio.
What shortens the life of polymeric sand joints
Joints that are too shallow
Most polymeric sands we carry list a 1-1/2 in minimum joint depth, including Alliance's G2 sands, Techniseal SmartSand and HP NextGel, SEK PolySweep and SRW SimplyTough. SEK's PolySweep X-Treme is rated at a 1-1/4 in minimum. A shallow joint has less material to hold together.
Joints filled to the top
Alliance says the sand level must be at least 1/8 in below the top of the paver or the bottom of the chamfer, or erosion may occur, and that cured joints should never be in direct contact with foot traffic or tires. Techniseal warns that failing to recess the joint could lead to premature joint degradation.
A base that moves or does not drain
Alliance says all pavers must be completely interlocked for vehicle and pedestrian use. Techniseal says the bedding layer needs to drain so the sand can dry, and that some bedding materials trap moisture and cause issues. SRW adds that continuous dampness can prevent polymeric sand from curing properly and shorten the life of the joints. Solid paver edging and restraints keep the field from spreading.
The wrong product for the job
Every sand has a rated joint width and traffic use. Alliance Gator Dust Bond and SRW X-Treme are for pedestrian use only. Techniseal recommends HP NextGel over SmartSand for pool decks, high humidity areas, steep slopes and heavy traffic. Matching the product at the start matters more than anything you do later. Aggressive cleaning too soon
Techniseal restricts high pressure washers for the first 30 days after installing HP NextGel, SmartSand or NOCO, and suggests soft jet accessories after that. Alliance says to avoid power washing its Gator Nitro resin joint sand for at least 28 days.
Maintenance that helps joints last longer
- Clean gently. Alliance recommends Gator Shampoo for the whole surface including the joints, rinsed with a hose nozzle set to shower at normal household pressure, which it gives as typically 80 psi.
- Keep organic debris off the joints. Techniseal says excessive moisture, shade, soil and organic matter such as grass trimmings left on the joints can contribute to moss, mold or mildew and premature deterioration. Alliance notes its sands neither cause nor prevent moss.
- Expect some softening when wet. Techniseal notes that its joints become soft when humid and harden again when dry. That is normal behavior, not a failure.
- Seal only after the joints have hardened. Techniseal says to wait at least 7 days after installing HP NextGel or NOCO (and up to 30 days depending on conditions) and typically 30 days for SmartSand. SRW says to wait 28 days before cleaning or sealing X-Treme. Many paver sealers also stabilize the joint surface once applied.
Signs your joints need attention
Walk the surface once a season and look for joints that have dropped well below the paver surface, sand washing out after rain, cracks that open along the joint, weeds rooting in the joint itself, or pavers that rock underfoot. Rocking pavers usually point to a base or edging problem, and new sand will not fix that on its own.
Repairing and replacing worn joints
Alliance's instructions for an existing paver surface are a good template. Remove the existing jointing material without disturbing the bedding underneath, let the pavers dry completely, then install the new polymeric sand at least 1-1/2 in deep and follow the full installation steps. Do not mix polymeric sand with other materials in the joint; both Alliance and Techniseal say not to.

Storing leftover bags
How long does polymeric sand last in the bag is a separate question, and the answer is that unused sand keeps if it stays dry. SEK gives PolySweep a 24 month shelf life when stored in a cool, dry place below 90°F, and says to protect the bag from punctures, constant moisture and sunlight. Alliance packs its sands in waterproof bags and says intact pallets can be stored outdoors. Keep opened bags sealed and off the ground.
