Paver sand is the part of a hardscape nobody thinks about until it fails. Get it right and your patio stays tight, level and weed-free for a decade or more. Get it wrong and you get sunken pavers, ant hills in the joints, washed-out gaps after the first heavy rain, and a chalky haze across the surface that no amount of scrubbing will remove.
The confusing part is that the phrase paver sand actually covers two completely different materials doing two completely different jobs. One goes under the pavers. One goes between them. Mixing them up is the single most common reason DIY patios fail early. This guide covers both, in the order you install them.
Bedding sand is the thin, screeded layer your pavers actually sit on. Its job is to let each paver seat evenly and to lock the bottom edges in place once you compact. It should be a clean, sharp, angular sand, usually sold as concrete sand or ASTM C33 sand. It is not play sand, not mason sand, and not stone dust.
Joint sand is what you sweep into the gaps between pavers after they are laid. Modern joint sand is polymeric sand, which is graded sand blended with polymer binders that activate when you wet them and cure into a firm, flexible joint. That cured joint is what resists weeds, insects, washout and freeze-thaw movement.
You need both. Bedding sand alone leaves open joints that wash out. Polymeric sand alone cannot fix an uneven or poorly prepared base.
Bedding sand is a levelling layer, not a base. It cannot correct dips, soft spots or poor drainage. Your compacted aggregate base needs to be firm, uniform and pitched roughly a quarter inch per foot away from any structure before you touch sand. Lay geotextile fabric between the subgrade and base to stop fines from migrating. If you are working over a tight footprint or want to skip several inches of excavation, an interlocking base panel system is worth pricing out.
Lay two lengths of one inch pipe on the compacted base, parallel, slightly narrower than your screed board. One inch is the target depth for bedding sand. Thicker is not better. A two or three inch sand bed will keep settling for years and your pavers will go with it.
Pour sand between the rails, then drag the screed board across them in a sawing motion until the surface is uniform. Work in sections you can reach without stepping on the screeded sand. When a section is done, lift the rails out and fill the two grooves with a trowel, feathering them level.
This trips up almost every first-timer. The bedding layer stays loose and uncompacted until the pavers are on top of it. Compacting it first destroys the ability of each paver to seat itself, and you will end up chasing high and low spots all afternoon.
Work off the pavers you have already set. Place each one straight down into position rather than sliding it, which pushes sand into ridges. Keep your joint spacing consistent, and check your lines with a string every few rows.
Run a plate compactor over the whole field, ideally with a protective mat or pad so you do not scuff the faces. Two passes in different directions is typical. This seats the pavers about a quarter inch into the sand and pushes the bottom of each joint tight. Install your edge restraint before or immediately after this step, because without it the perimeter will creep outward and your joints will open up.
This is the step that ruins more polymeric sand jobs than any other. The pavers, the joints and the sand all need to be completely dry before the sand goes in. Damp joints activate the polymer early, deep in the joint, and you get a weak bond up top plus a real risk of haze. If it rained yesterday, wait. If there is dew, wait for it to burn off.
Pour the sand out and work it into the joints with a stiff push broom, sweeping diagonally across the pavers rather than parallel to the joint lines. Diagonal strokes drop sand into the gaps instead of dragging it back out. Keep going until every joint is packed.
For deeper joints, vibrate the surface with the plate compactor after the first sweep. The sand will drop noticeably. Sweep in a second round and repeat until the joints hold full. You are aiming for sand about an eighth of an inch below the paver surface, not flush and not overflowing.
Use a leaf blower on a low angle, held well back, and blow the surface completely clean. Any polymeric sand left sitting on top of a paver will activate when you water and bond there as a stubborn white film. This is where haze comes from, and five extra minutes with the blower saves hours of remediation.
Follow the label on your specific product, because activation methods genuinely differ between brands. The general approach is a gentle shower or fan spray, never a jet, applied in short passes with a pause between them so the water soaks in rather than running across the surface and carrying sand with it. Stop before you get pooling or milky runoff. Then leave it alone. Most products want 24 hours before foot traffic and longer before vehicles.
Joint width is the number that decides which product will actually hold. Putting a narrow-joint sand into a wide gap is a guaranteed callback.

No. Polymeric sand is a jointing product. It is not graded or priced for a bedding layer, and a cured mass of it under your pavers would defeat the flexibility the whole system relies on.

If the joint has simply lost depth, you can usually clean it out and refill to the required minimum depth. If the joint has failed, or is contaminated with soil, roots or old sand, take it all out. Polymeric sand needs clean paver faces to bond to.
Coverage swings a lot with joint width, joint depth and paver size, so use the range on the bag. Techniseal EZ Sand, for instance, covers roughly 50 square feet per 35 lb bag on typical joints. Work out your square footage and buy one bag more than you think you need.
