Step 1: Choose the right sand before you buy polymeric sand online
The most useful thing you can do before ordering is match the product to your joints. Polymeric sands differ in the joint widths they are rated for, the minimum joint depth, the temperatures they can be installed in and how long they need to stay dry. Those figures are set by each manufacturer and printed on the data sheet, not on a generic chart.

Weather limits matter when you pick a delivery date. As one example, the Alliance Gator Super Sand Bond data sheet says the sand sets within 1 hour after water activation above 32°F (0°C) and that no rain should occur within 1 hour after activation. Other products have different requirements, so check the data sheet for yours.
Step 2: Calculate how much you need
Coverage per bag changes a lot with joint width and depth, which is why we built the polymeric sand calculator around manufacturer coverage figures. For example, the SEK Surebond PolySweep data sheet lists 50 to 75 sq ft per 50 lb bag for joints up to 1/4 in, but only 15 to 25 sq ft per bag for joints from 1/2 to 3/4 in. The same patio can need very different amounts depending on the gaps between your pavers.

When your order arrives: storage basics
Bags of joint sand often sit for a few days before install day. Storage rules come from each manufacturer, so follow the one for your product. A few examples from the data sheets:
- SEK Surebond PolySweep: store in a cool, dry location and keep below 90°F. SEK says to protect the packaging from punctures and from long term exposure to constant moisture and UV light.
- SRW X-Treme: store in the original packaging, in a dry place away from UV rays. SRW says bags may be stored outside if properly protected with an opaque, waterproof tarp.
- ROMEX Ecofine: the data sheet says that once the vacuum sealed bag is opened it cannot be resealed, and unused material must be fully submerged in clean water right after use or it will harden.
Keep bags sealed until you are ready to install. Besides protecting the product, an unopened bag is still returnable within 30 days.
