The ICPI-Spec Base Fabric

SRW SS5 is a 200 lb tensile woven slit-film geotextile that goes between subsoil and base: it stops the two from mixing, meets ICPI specifications, and can reduce how much base material the job needs.

Why Contractors Ask for SS5 by Name

Patios sink for a quiet reason: base stone that migrates into soft subgrade stops being base. The fix costs a rebuild; the prevention costs a roll of fabric.

  • Separation. Keeps base aggregate and subgrade soil apart permanently.
  • ICPI-spec strength. 200 lb grab tensile woven slit film, puncture and tear resistant.
  • Less base needed. A stabilized base can be built thinner, per ICPI guidance.
  • Long-term performance. The cheapest insurance under any paver field.

Where SS5 Works

SS5 is recommended by SRW Products for stabilization and separation duty:

  • Under paver patios, walks and driveways
  • Structural support under retaining wall base
  • Base reinforcement for roadways and sidewalks
  • Any separation between subsoil and aggregate

SS5 Comes in Three Formats

Same 200 lb woven slit film fabric in all three. The difference is how it is packaged, which decides how wide you can run it and what it costs per square foot:

  • Standard rolls, 4 ft and 6 ft wide β€” Cored rolls in the sizes most patios and walks need. Easiest to carry and cut on site.
  • Folded rolls, 12.5 ft and 17.5 ft wide (you are here) β€” Folded flat in a carton instead of wound on a core. Wide coverage with far fewer seams, and they fit in a pickup.
  • Contractor rolls, 600 sq yd β€” Full production rolls on a core. The cheapest fabric per square foot, for crews running SS5 all season.

Installation at a Glance

The full step by step guide is in the official TDS below. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Excavate. to your base depth and compact the subgrade.
  2. Roll. SS5 across the compacted subgrade, overlapping seams by several inches.
  3. Pin. the edges and seams with landscape staples so nothing shifts.
  4. Build. your base aggregate directly on top and compact as normal.

Always pull the fabric taut and remove wrinkles before covering.

Quick Answers

Do I really need fabric under a patio?
On soft or clay soils, yes. Without separation, base stone slowly migrates into the subgrade and the surface settles.

Woven or non-woven?
Woven for strength under base and traffic. Non-woven for drainage jobs like French drains.

SS5 or SS6?
SS5 (200 lb) covers residential patios, walks and drives. SS6 (315 lb) is the step up for heavier structural work.

What holds it in place while I work?
Landscape staples every few feet along edges and seams. We sell those too.
