What It Binds

• Pea gravel and decorative stone on paths, borders and around features, so it stops migrating underfoot.
• Rubber mulch in play areas, where washout is the usual failure.
• Straw as a binder on newly seeded ground, holding it against wind and rain until the grass takes.
• Loose aggregate on slopes, where gravity and runoff would otherwise move it downhill every storm.

Why Permeability Matters Here

A binder that seals the surface solid causes as many problems as it fixes. Water sheets off instead of soaking in, which starves whatever is planted nearby and sends runoff somewhere it was not meant to go. This binds the particles to each other while leaving the voids between them open, so the surface still drains.

Getting a Good Result

• Make sure the material is clean and dry before you apply. Dust between particles stops the binder gripping.
• Apply evenly and let it soak down through the layer rather than pooling on top.
• Work in sections so you keep a wet edge and do not leave banding.
• Give it time to cure fully before traffic. A partly cured binder pulls apart under a boot.
• Expect to top up over years. Any binder on an exposed surface weathers eventually.

Where It Is Not the Answer

This stabilises a decorative or functional loose surface. It is not a structural binder and it will not turn gravel into a load bearing drive.
