The Colour Code, and What It Means for Pavers
Pressure washer tips are colour coded by spray angle, and on hardscape the angle matters more than the pressure. A narrow angle concentrates all the force in a tiny area, which is how people carve stripes into concrete and blast the joints out of a paver patio.
| Red, 0 degrees | A pencil jet. Almost never right on hardscape. It will scar concrete and destroy pavers. |
| Yellow, 15 degrees | Aggressive stripping. Use with care and keep it moving. |
| Green, 25 degrees | The general purpose angle for washing down a slab. |
| White, 40 degrees | Gentle rinsing and finishing, and the safest on softer or older pavers. |
| Black, soap | Low pressure, for applying detergent or cleaner. |
Check the Orifice Size Against Your Machine
Tip orifice size must match your washer’s flow and pressure. A tip that is too small raises pressure beyond what the pump is built for, and one that is too large drops pressure so nothing gets clean. The 4.0 mm size here suits mid range machines. If you are not sure what your washer needs, the size is usually printed on the original tips or in the manual, and we can check it with you.

Before You Wash a Paver Patio
- Start with the widest angle and only step down if it is not working.
- Keep the tip moving and hold a consistent distance. Pausing cuts a mark you cannot undo.
- Expect to re-sand the joints. Almost any pressure washing removes joint sand, and the patio needs re-sanding afterwards.
- Check your sand first. ROMEX ECOFINE is rated pressure washer safe up to 2000 psi. Many polymeric sands are not.
