Bonds New Concrete to Old, and Makes the Floor Leveler Work
DAP Bonding Liquid and Floor Leveler Additive is an acrylic latex admixture that does two jobs. Brushed on undiluted it is a bonding agent that lets new concrete grip old. Mixed into a batch it raises adhesion and flexibility in plaster, mortar, concrete, stucco and cement paint. It is also the liquid DAP specifies for its Concrete Floor Leveler, which does not mix with water.

The Two Ways to Use It

As a bonding agent Apply undiluted to a clean dry surface by brush, roller or spray. Let it become tacky, then make the repair against it. Work in sections of about 3 ft by 3 ft so it does not dry before you get there.
As an admixture Mix it into the batch to raise adhesion and flexibility. DAP publishes ratios per material, listed below.

Mixing Ratios DAP Publishes

Floor leveler, 25 lb 3 quarts
Floor leveler, 4 lb 1 pint
Concrete, 10 lb bag 1/4 pint
Concrete, 45 lb bag 1 pint
Concrete, 90 lb bag 1 quart

Which Size You Need

If you are buying this to go with DAP Concrete Floor Leveler, the 25 lb bag of leveler needs 2.5 quarts, so the gallon is the size that pairs with it. The pint is sized for DAP’s small 5 lb leveler bag or for use as a bonding agent on a modest repair. Buying a pint to mix a 25 lb bag will leave you well short.

Surface Preparation

  • The surface must be clean, structurally sound and free of foreign material.
  • Mechanical abrasion is DAP’s preferred preparation.
  • Oil contaminated surfaces need steam cleaning with detergent, then rinsing and drying.
  • Remove excess wet material with a damp sponge before it dries. Once it has dried it is far harder to take off.
  • Clean tools with warm soapy water.

A Note on the Name

You will see this product sold as a concrete bonder, and some packaging carries the Bondex mark. Neither is DAP’s current name for it. DAP calls it Bonding Liquid and Floor Leveler Additive, and Bondex is a heritage mark that no longer appears in DAP’s current United States technical literature. Worth knowing if you are cross referencing a spec or reordering. Note also that DAP makes a separate product called Concrete Bonding Additive, items 02131 and 02132, which is a different chemistry with different ratios and coverage. This is not that product.
