Why Contractors Ask for Gator Nails by Name
A spiral nail resists pull-out far better than a common nail in loose or freeze-thaw ground, which is exactly the condition a paver perimeter lives in. For turf, the 6 inch spiral holds the backing without showing.

For edge restraint, Alliance calls for a fastener at every second hole plus every junction. Gator Edge holes are at 5 in spacing, so budget roughly one nail per 10 in of perimeter and add for junctions.

When to Use Screws Instead
On a Gator Base installation, use Gator Base Screws instead. Nails do not hold in a foam panel.

How to Fasten Gator Edge
The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:
- Set the edging firmly against the paving units.
- Drive a nail at every second hole through the base tabs into compacted aggregate.
- Add one at every junction between pieces of edging for continuous lateral support.
- Backfill against the outside of the restraint.
Common or Spiral? And What Length?
Two questions, and the ground answers both.
- Spiral, the shank twists as it drives, so it grips and resists being pushed back out by frost. Worth it in freeze-thaw ground and loose aggregate.
- Common, smooth shank, drives faster, cheaper per nail. Fine in dense, stable base.
- 10 in, the standard for paver edge restraint on a normal 6 in compacted base.
- 12 in, more bite in soft or sandy subgrade, or a deeper base.
- 6 in spiral, artificial turf only. Long enough to hold the backing, short enough to disappear under infill.
