Why Gator Nails?

The Nails That Hold Your Edge Restraint Down

A spiral nail resists pull-out far better than a common nail in loose or freeze-thaw ground, which is exactly the condition a paver perimeter lives in. For turf, the 6 inch spiral holds the backing without showing.

Why Contractors Ask for Gator Nails by Name

A spiral nail resists pull-out far better than a common nail in loose or freeze-thaw ground, which is exactly the condition a paver perimeter lives in. For turf, the 6 inch spiral holds the backing without showing.

  • 10 in Gator Nails are the fastener Alliance specifies for Gator Edge Rigid, Flex, Mini and X4.
  • Spiral shank resists pull-out through frost heave and settlement in a way a smooth common nail does not.
  • 6 in spiral turf nails, 700 per box, for artificial grass installation at Alliance's 4 to 6 in spacing.
  • Four landscape spike options so you can match shank and length to the ground you are in.

Gator Nails Specifications

6 in Spiral turf nails 700 per box. For artificial turf, spaced 4 to 6 in
10 in Common 180 per box
12 in Common 130 per box
10 in Spiral 250 per box
12 in Spiral 210 per box
Use with Gator Edge Rigid, Flex, Mini and X4. Gator X-Turf installations

For edge restraint, Alliance calls for a fastener at every second hole plus every junction. Gator Edge holes are at 5 in spacing, so budget roughly one nail per 10 in of perimeter and add for junctions.

Where Gator Nails Works

Alliance rates these for:

  • Fastening Gator Edge paver restraint
  • Anchoring artificial turf, using the 6 in spiral
  • Landscape timber and general staking
  • Any perimeter where restraint has to stay put through freeze-thaw

When to Use Screws Instead

On a Gator Base installation, use Gator Base Screws instead. Nails do not hold in a foam panel.

Gator Tile Edge takes Gator Base Screws only, not nails.

How to Fasten Gator Edge

The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Set the edging firmly against the paving units.
  2. Drive a nail at every second hole through the base tabs into compacted aggregate.
  3. Add one at every junction between pieces of edging for continuous lateral support.
  4. Backfill against the outside of the restraint.

Common or Spiral? And What Length?

Two questions, and the ground answers both.

  • Spiral, the shank twists as it drives, so it grips and resists being pushed back out by frost. Worth it in freeze-thaw ground and loose aggregate.
  • Common, smooth shank, drives faster, cheaper per nail. Fine in dense, stable base.
  • 10 in, the standard for paver edge restraint on a normal 6 in compacted base.
  • 12 in, more bite in soft or sandy subgrade, or a deeper base.
  • 6 in spiral, artificial turf only. Long enough to hold the backing, short enough to disappear under infill.

Quick Answers

Which nail does Gator Edge need?
10 in Gator Nails, per Alliance, unless you are on Gator Base in which case use Gator Base Screws.

How many nails per foot of edging?
One at every second hole. Gator Edge holes sit at 5 in spacing, so roughly one nail per 10 in, plus one at every junction.

Spiral or common?
Spiral holds better against frost heave and in loose ground. Common is fine in dense stable base and costs less.

What holds artificial turf down?
The 6 in spiral turf nails, at 4 to 6 in spacing per Alliance. 4 in finishing nails lie flat against the backing and get covered by infill.

Can I nail into Gator Base?
No. Foam panels need Gator Base Screws.

How many come in a box?
700 for the 6 in spiral, 250 for the 10 in spiral, 210 for the 12 in spiral, 180 for the 10 in common and 130 for the 12 in common.
