Paw Shield is built on a dual formulation of CMA and corn steep rather than straight rock salt or calcium chloride. That is a deliberately gentler chemistry, and the colored granules mean you can see your coverage as you go. Dual Acting Means Two Different Mechanisms

Corn steep is an agricultural byproduct that lowers the working temperature and helps the product cling rather than bounce off. CMA, calcium magnesium acetate, is an acetate rather than a chloride, so it works by stopping ice particles bonding to each other and to the pavement. Together they melt without the harshness that makes rock salt so hard on concrete and paws.
