Techniseal STORM Jointing Compound: Wet Weather Install Guide

Techniseal STORM Multi Weather Permeable Jointing Compound 40 lb bucket

Polymeric Sand Store Hardscape Experts |

Techniseal STORM is a multi weather jointing compound, which means you can install it in wet or dry conditions instead of watching the forecast and losing the day. Techniseal describes it as permeable, ready to use with no mixing, and reusable, so what you sweep off the surface is not wasted. It handles joints from 1/8 in to 2 in with intersecting spaces up to 4 in, on pavers, natural stone, large concrete slabs and outdoor porcelain.

This guide covers what STORM is rated for, where Techniseal says it belongs and where it does not, the installation sequence, coverage per 40 lb bucket, and the warranty, using figures from the Techniseal product page and data sheet. Multi weather does not mean any weather, so download the current data sheet from our TDS and SDS library for the temperature and condition limits before you start.

Quick answer

  • STORM is a permeable, no mix, reusable jointing compound sold in 40 lb buckets in Black, Granite, Ivory and Tan.
  • Joint width: 1/8 in to 2 in, regular joints, with intersecting spaces up to 4 in. Installs in wet or dry conditions, on flat and sloped surfaces, in normal or high humidity.
  • Coverage: approximately 90 to 125 sq ft per 40 lb bucket, depending on surface porosity and joint width.
  • Rated for walkways, pool decks, patios and other non vehicular areas, for pedestrian use only, with a 5 year limited warranty.

What Techniseal STORM is

Techniseal STORM is Techniseal's answer to the days every hardscape crew loses to weather: a jointing compound that does not require a dry window to go down. Here is how it differs from a typical water activated polymeric sand:

Feature Typical polymeric sand Techniseal STORM
Weather at installation Needs a dry surface and a dry window after activation Rated for wet and dry conditions
Water through the joint Varies by product Permeable; water passes through the joint rather than sitting on the surface
Excess material Swept off and discarded Reusable; sweep it off and use it again
Preparation Dry sand poured from the bag Ready to use, no mixing, straight out of the pail
Intersecting spaces Varies by product Up to 4 in, where the corners of four pavers meet
Packaging Usually 50 lb bags 40 lb bucket

Where to use it (and where not to)

STORM earns its place on jobs where the weather or the drainage will not cooperate. Techniseal lists these applications:

  • Walkways, pool decks and patios
  • Other non vehicular areas
  • Permeable paver systems where drainage through the joint matters
  • Jobs scheduled into an unreliable weather window
  • Natural stone and large format concrete slab installations
  • Outdoor porcelain paver work
  • Sloped surfaces and high humidity areas
  • Joints from 1/8 in to 2 in, including wide intersecting spaces

The limits come straight from the manufacturer:

  • Pedestrian use only. Techniseal does not recommend STORM for vehicular traffic and says not to use it on residential or commercial driveways. For driveways, use HP NextGel.
  • Stay inside the joint range. Do not use it outside the 1/8 in to 2 in joint range, or with intersecting spaces wider than 4 in.
  • Weigh the warranty. The 5 year warranty is shorter than the 20 years on HP NextGel and NOCO. On a premium install where longevity is the priority, weigh that difference.
  • Multi weather does not mean any weather. Read the current technical data sheet for the temperature and condition limits before you start.

How to install Techniseal STORM

Follow the official Techniseal STORM instructions and the data sheet current at the time you install. This is the shape of the job as Techniseal lays it out:

  1. Check the base and joints. Confirm the pavers or stone are laid on a properly prepared base and the joints are clear of debris.
  2. Sweep it in. Pour STORM out and sweep it into the joints. No mixing is required.
  3. Fill the intersections. Work it fully down into the joints, including the intersecting spaces where four units meet.
  4. Sweep off and collect. Sweep the excess off the surface and collect it, because it is reusable.
  5. Activate. Activate per the Techniseal instructions for the conditions you are working in, wet or dry.
  6. Keep traffic off. Stay off the surface through the cure period given in the technical data sheet.

Collect the excess rather than binning it. On a big job the saved material is worth the extra few minutes.

How much Techniseal STORM you need

Techniseal gives approximately 90 to 125 sq ft per 40 lb bucket, and notes coverage depends on surface porosity and joint width. That is a usefully tight range compared with most jointing products, but confirm against your own joint dimensions before ordering for a large job.

Container Coverage per Techniseal
40 lb bucket Approximately 90 to 125 sq ft, depending on surface porosity and joint width

Wide joints and porous stone land at the low end of that range; tight joints on dense pavers land at the high end. For a bucket count based on your paver size and joint width, use our polymeric sand calculator and compare against the range above, or call us and we will work it out with you. To see Black, Granite, Ivory and Tan against your pavers before ordering, the STORM color samples include all four.

Warranty and testing

Techniseal backs STORM with a 5 year limited warranty. The product page does not list laboratory test results, so for testing detail check the manufacturer data sheet in our TDS and SDS library.

Techniseal also notes that STORM pairs with its HD Paver Prep for surface cleaning before jointing, with HP NextGel for vehicular areas of the same project, and with NOCO for flagstone areas where compaction is not possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really install STORM in the rain?

Techniseal rates STORM for use in wet and dry weather conditions. Check the current technical data sheet for the specific limits before you commit a crew to it.

How much does one bucket of STORM cover?

Approximately 90 to 125 sq ft per 40 lb bucket, depending on surface porosity and joint width.

Can I use STORM on a driveway?

No. Techniseal rates STORM for pedestrian use only and says not to use it on residential or commercial driveways. For a driveway, Techniseal points to HP NextGel.

What does permeable mean here?

Water passes through the joint rather than running off, which suits permeable paver systems and helps drainage on ordinary installs.

Is the leftover STORM really reusable?

Yes. Techniseal lists reusability as a product feature, so sweep it up and keep it.
