Safer Is A Spectrum, Not A Switch

No de-icer is completely harmless to an animal that licks its paws afterward. “Safer” means the formulation is less irritating and less likely to cause harm than conventional rock salt.

Description
“Safer For Children & Pets,” Down To Fifteen Below
Blue Emperor, which Chemical Equipment Labs makes as Emperor Melt, sits in the useful middle of the ice melt range. The maker’s bag says “Safer for Children & Pets” and “Vegetation Friendly,” and it holds its performance down to -15 F, which is colder than most products carrying those claims manage. For a household with animals crossing the treated surface daily, that combination is the whole argument.

The Tradeoff Every Gentler Melter Makes

Products that are gentler on paws are almost always gentler because they contain less aggressive chloride, and less aggressive chloride usually means a higher working temperature. Blue Emperor holding to -15 F while still carrying the maker’s “Safer for Children & Pets” wording is what makes it worth stocking alongside the harsher options.

Safer Is A Spectrum, Not A Switch

No de-icer is completely harmless to an animal that licks its paws afterward. “Safer” means the formulation is less irritating and less likely to cause harm than conventional rock salt. Wiping paws after a walk is still the single most effective thing you can do, whatever product is on the ground.

Questions about this product

Ask a question ›
Is Blue Emperor pet safe?
The bag says "Safer for Children & Pets", which is the maker's wording. No ice melt is completely safe for pets, so we do not use that term. Keep pets off freshly treated areas while the product works, wipe paws after walks, and store the bag closed and out of reach. Compare every pet labeled option in our Pet Friendly Ice Melt collection.
Looking for pet safe ice melt?
Most shoppers search for "pet safe ice melt". We call these products pet friendly instead, because every ice melt is a chemical. Our Pet Friendly Ice Melt collection lists every pet labeled ice melt we carry, side by side, with what each label actually says.
When will it ship?
In-stock orders placed before 2:00 PM Eastern on a weekday ship the same day from our Williamstown, New Jersey warehouse by UPS or FedEx Ground. The cut-off is when the carriers start arriving; order after it, or on a weekend, and it ships the next business day. Just missed it? Call (856) 418-4895: if the carrier has not picked up yet we do our best to get it out the same day. The box above the Add to cart button shows the live countdown and an arrival estimate for your ZIP. Phones are answered 24/7; the warehouse itself is open for pick-ups and returns Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to noon, Eastern. For a pick-up, call first so we can pull your order.
Can I buy by the pallet?
Yes. Full pallets ship by freight truck, so we price the delivery for your address instead of guessing. Request a pallet quote or call (856) 418-4895 and we will call you back with a delivered price.
Where are the technical and safety data sheets?
The manufacturers' technical and safety data sheets are collected in the TDS and SDS library. Coverage, cure time and application temperatures on this page come from those sheets.
Is contractor or bulk pricing available?
No. One price for everyone: the price on the page is what contractors, landscapers and homeowners all pay. For full pallets, request a pallet quote and we will price the freight to your address.
