The One in This Range You Can Walk On Barefoot
Pavestone Pea Pebbles are small rounded stones in neutral tones. Pavestone calls out excellent drainage and recommends them for playgrounds, dog runs, walkways and decorative beds, and the rounded shape is exactly why: nothing in this range is kinder underfoot or on paws.

What Pavestone Recommends It For

  • Playgrounds and dog runs. Rounded stone with no sharp fracture edges, unlike lava rock or crushed stone.
  • Walkways and paths, where it is comfortable to walk on and easy to rake level.
  • Decorative beds and borders, as a permanent alternative to wood mulch.
  • Drainage, which is the property Pavestone leads with for this product.

A Small Gravel Behaves Differently From a Big One

Colorado State University Extension reports that pea gravel improves water infiltration into soil, particularly in short intense downpours, while larger rocks increase runoff, and that even a thin gravel layer can double the rain reaching the soil. It also notes that to function as a mulch at all rather than as decoration, a stone needs to be around half an inch or smaller. Pea gravel sits in that range. The larger decorative stones do not.

One Caution on Play Areas

Rounded pea gravel is a common playground surfacing and is far kinder than angular stone, but it is not a certified impact attenuating surface. If you are surfacing under play equipment where fall height matters, a product tested to that standard is the right buy, not a decorative landscape gravel. We would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing.

Stone Against Wood Mulch

  • Stone is permanent. Wood needs topping up every year or two.
  • Stone stays put on slopes and in wind where wood chips wash and blow away.
  • Stone does not harbour termites or ants the way organic mulch can.
  • Wood feeds the soil. It decomposes and improves structure over time. Stone does not.
  • Stone is hard to reverse. Once it silts in with soil it has to be dug and screened out.

Where These Facts Come From

Pavestone is a brand of The Quikrete Companies, and unlike Quikrete’s cement products it publishes no data sheet for bagged landscape stone. Its own catalogue records carry the product description and nothing else: no weight, no stone size, no coverage. So this page states what Pavestone itself says, and where a figure comes from retailer data instead we label it as such rather than presenting it as a manufacturer specification. No product in this range carries a washed, graded or ASTM claim from Pavestone.
