KolorScape River Rock 0.5 Cu Ft Bag, 3/4 to 1 in Decorative Stone
What It Is For
Oldcastle lists it for flower beds, planters, walkways, driveways and drainage areas. In practice this is a decorative surfacing stone. It is rounded rather than crushed, so it looks natural and is comfortable to walk on, but it does not interlock.
- Beds and borders, where a permanent surface beats topping up wood mulch every year.
- Dry creek beds and swales, where the rounded shape reads as natural watercourse.
- Downspout outfalls and splash areas, to break the fall of water and stop it digging a hole.
- Around planters and features, as a clean edge that does not decay.

How Many Bags You Need
Oldcastle prints the coverage on the bag: a half cubic foot bag covers approximately 4 to 6 square feet at 1 inch deep, or about 3 square feet at 2 inches. Their own rule of thumb is to multiply your square footage by 0.33 for a 2 inch layer, or by 0.5 for a 3 inch layer.
| 1 inch deep | About 4 to 6 sq ft per bag |
| 2 inches deep | About 3 sq ft per bag, or square footage x 0.33 |
| 3 inches deep | Square footage x 0.5 |
| Example, a 5 ft x 20 ft bed | 100 sq ft, so about 32 bags at 2 inches or 49 bags at 3 inches |
Honest Note on Calling It Mulch
The bag says perfect mulch, and for suppressing weeds that is a stretch at this size. Colorado State University Extension is specific that a stone has to be around half an inch or smaller to actually function as a mulch, and that larger stone provides landscape interest rather than mulch benefit. River Rock at three quarters to an inch is decorative surfacing. If weed suppression is your goal, our Mini Marble at three eighths of an inch is the size that does that job.
Where Rounded Stone Is the Wrong Choice
Rounded stone has point contact between pieces, so it rolls and re-packs under load. That is fine for a bed or a splash area and wrong under a path, a drive or anything bearing weight, where you want an angular crushed stone that interlocks. It is also not a specified drainage aggregate, so do not build a structural French drain or a foundation perimeter drain from it.
What Is and Is Not on the Bag
We would rather tell you what is documented than pad the page. KolorScape is a bagged landscape stone brand distributed by Oldcastle Lawn and Garden, and Oldcastle does not publish technical data sheets for these products the way a cement or sealer manufacturer does. There is no washed designation, no gradation, and no ASTM size number on any bag in this range. Everything on this page comes from the printed bag panel or Oldcastle item data. Where a figure is not published, we have left it out rather than guessed.
