Why the Size Matters Here

Colorado State University Extension is specific that to function as a mulch a stone needs to be no more than around half an inch across, and that research has shown gravel under a centimetre suppresses weeds and reduces evaporation comparably to wood chip mulch. At three eighths of an inch these chips sit inside that range. The larger decorative stones in the KolorScape line do not, whatever the bag says.

How Many Bags You Need

Oldcastle prints the coverage on the bag: a half cubic foot bag covers approximately 4 to 6 square feet at 1 inch deep, or about 3 square feet at 2 inches. Their own rule of thumb is to multiply your square footage by 0.33 for a 2 inch layer, or by 0.5 for a 3 inch layer.

Honest Trade Offs of a Stone Mulch

Stone does not decompose, so it never feeds the soil the way wood chips do, and it is permanent in a way people underestimate. Once it has silted in with soil and leaf litter it has to be physically dug out and screened, not just raked off. Stone also moves more heat down into the soil than wood does, which can push tender plants into growth early. Against that, it stays put on slopes and in wind, it never needs replacing, and it does not attract wood pests. Pick it for permanence, not for soil health.

A Note on White

White marble shows dirt in a way brown stone does not. In a bed under trees it will collect leaf tannin and organic staining over a few seasons. That is a maintenance choice rather than a defect, and it is worth knowing before you cover a large area. In containers and in open sunny beds it stays bright far longer.
