How Many Bags You Need

Oldcastle prints the coverage on the bag: a half cubic foot bag covers approximately 4 to 6 square feet at 1 inch deep, or about 3 square feet at 2 inches. Their own rule of thumb is to multiply your square footage by 0.33 for a 2 inch layer, or by 0.5 for a 3 inch layer.

Read This Before You Build a French Drain With It

This matters more than anything else on the page, so we will be direct. A real drainage aggregate is sold against a specification: an ASTM D448 size number, most commonly No. 57 stone, and a washed designation meaning the quarry fines have been rinsed out. Those fines are the whole game. Federal Highway Administration figures show that adding just 5 percent non plastic fines to a base drops its permeability from about 10 feet per day to 0.07 feet per day, and 10 percent fines takes it to 0.001 feet per day. That is a roughly hundred and fiftyfold loss from an amount of silt you cannot see in a bag.

• KolorScape publishes no size number, no gradation and no washed designation for this product. That is not evidence it is dirty. It is evidence that it is sold as a consumer landscape stone rather than against a drainage specification.
• For a downspout outfall, a planter base or a decorative dry well, it is a sensible buy.
• For a structural French drain, a foundation perimeter drain or anything under a pavement, buy a specified washed No. 57 stone instead. Call us and we will point you at one rather than sell you the wrong thing by the bag.
• Whatever stone you use, separate it from the soil. Clean stone laid straight against soil silts up and stops draining within a few seasons. Building code requires a filter membrane over foundation drain stone for exactly this reason.

Why Angular Beats Rounded Under Load

Crushed stone has face to face contact and edge interlock, so the mass resists rutting and settlement and the voids stay open under load. Rounded stone has point contact, so it rolls and re-packs. If anything is going to be walked or driven on, angular is the shape you want. That is the genuine advantage this product has over the River Rock and Egg Rock in the same range.
