The One Here Actually Rated for a Moving Joint
Sikaflex Self Leveling Sealant is a single component, moisture cure polyurethane for horizontal expansion and control joints in concrete slabs. It is self levelling, so it flows out flush rather than needing tooling, and it carries ASTM C920 Type S Grade P Class 25 with plus or minus 25 percent movement capability.

Joint Limits, and They Are Not Suggestions

Getting the joint geometry wrong is the most common way a good sealant fails. Sika publishes hard limits and a required width to depth ratio, and a backer rod or bond breaker tape is mandatory on horizontal joints so the sealant bonds to two faces and not three.

Maximum width 1 1/2 inches
Minimum width 1/4 inch
Maximum depth 1/2 inch
Minimum depth 1/4 inch, and 1/2 inch minimum for joints taking traffic
Width to depth ratio 2 to 1
Backer rod Always, on horizontal joints
Movement limit Expansion and contraction must not exceed 25 percent of average joint width

Coverage per 29 oz Cartridge

1/4 in wide by 1/4 in deep 69.8 lineal feet
3/8 in by 1/4 in 46.5 lineal feet
1/2 in by 1/2 in 17.4 lineal feet
3/4 in by 1/2 in 11.6 lineal feet
1 in by 1/2 in 8.7 lineal feet
1 1/2 in by 1/2 in 5.8 lineal feet

Where Sika Says Not to Use It

  • Not for sloped surfaces. It is self levelling. On a slope it runs.
  • Not in contact with bituminous or asphaltic materials.
  • Do not cure it near curing silicone sealants.
  • Not where moisture vapour is coming up through the slab. It bubbles.
  • Do not apply above 100 F. In extreme heat, install as temperatures are falling.
  • Avoid alcohol and solvent cleaners during cure, and avoid silicone or high solvent paints over it.
  • Maximum chlorine exposure 5 ppm, which matters around pool decks.
  • Use an opened cartridge the same day.

Timing on New and Cut Concrete

  • Green concrete can be sealed 24 hours after it has cured, though adhesion may suffer on low strength concrete.
  • Where joints are formed, remove the forms 6 hours before sealing.
  • Where joints are saw cut, cut them 8 hours before sealing.
  • Install when the joint is at the middle of its expected movement range, not at its widest or narrowest.
  • Allow a week before total water immersion or painting.
