Resurface Worn Concrete Instead of Tearing It Out
Quikrete Re-Cap Concrete Resurfacer, product No. 1131, is a polymer modified portland cement topping that puts a new wearing surface over concrete that is worn, scaled or stained. It goes down from a feather edge up to half an inch, so you can restore a driveway without breaking it out and repouring.

What It Is For

Re-Cap is a blend of portland cement, sand, polymer and other additives, formulated to be shrinkage compensated so a thin layer can bond and stay put rather than curling off. Quikrete rates it for driveways, sidewalks, floors, patios, pool decks, parking decks and curbs, and at trowel consistency for spalled and pitted repair.

  • Feather edge to 1/2 inch, built up in layers no thicker than 1/4 inch each.
  • Two consistencies from one bag. Squeegee or brush for a thin resurfacing coat, trowel for filling spalls and cracks.
  • 5500 psi at 28 days at squeegee consistency, 6500 psi at trowel consistency.
  • Bond strength at least 400 psi at 7 days, tested to ASTM C1583.
  • Back in service quickly. Foot traffic at 8 hours, vehicle traffic at 24.

Surface Preparation Is Not Optional

Quikrete is blunt about this: pressure washing with a 2500 psi washer is essential to ensure a proper bond. Bring the surface to saturated surface dry, remove any standing water, and keep the concrete damp while you work. If it dries out, re-dampen it. Work in sections no larger than about 144 square feet.

Where Re-Cap Will Not Work

  • Painted or sealed concrete. Apply only to bare concrete.
  • Over Quikrete Concrete Bonding Adhesive No. 9902. Quikrete specifically rules this out.
  • Over acrylic or polyurethane crack fillers, including Quikrete Concrete Crack Seal, Blacktop Crackseal, Concrete Repair and Self-Leveling Polyurethane Sealant.
  • Mixed with anything but potable water. Do not use Concrete Acrylic Fortifier No. 8610 in it, and do not retemper the mix.

Honest Expectations

Cracks that move will come back. Reflective cracking through a thin topping cannot be fully prevented, and control and expansion joints have to be carried through rather than filled over. Variations and repairs in the concrete underneath can also shadow through. Re-Cap restores a worn surface, it does not hide a structural problem.

Application Steps

  • Pressure wash at 2500 psi and let the surface reach saturated surface dry.
  • Mix in a 5 gallon bucket with a half inch drill and paddle. Mix 2 minutes, rest 1 to 2, remix 1 minute.
  • Mix only what you can place in 20 minutes at squeegee consistency, or 10 minutes at trowel consistency.
  • Apply the first coat at 1/16 to 1/8 inch by squeegee, or up to 1/4 inch by trowel.
  • A second coat must go on within 24 hours, otherwise pressure wash again first.
  • Moist cure as soon as it is hard enough not to be marked, and keep curing 24 to 48 hours before use. Protect from rain for at least 8 hours.
