Type N Mortar in a Bag You Can Carry One Handed
Quikrete Mortar Mix, product No. 1102, is a contractor grade blend of masonry cement and graded sand for laying brick, block and stone. The 10 lb bag is the size for a repair, a repoint or a small feature rather than a wall, which is exactly when you do not want to open an 80 lb bag.

What It Is For

A pre-blended sanded mortar for laying brick, concrete masonry units and stone, and for repairing existing masonry. The standard formulation meets ASTM C270 and ASTM C1714 as Type N mortar, which is the general purpose specification for above grade work in non load bearing and moderate load conditions.

  • Laying brick, block and stone, and repairing masonry walls.
  • Tuck pointing and repointing existing mortar joints.
  • Barbecues, pillars, planters and garden walls, the jobs a small bag actually suits.
  • Just add water. Mix a minimum of 5 minutes for a uniform blend.

Getting the Consistency Right

Quikrete gives a simple field test. The mortar is right when a half inch thickness of it will not fall off a trowel held close to vertical. Too wet and it slumps out of the joint, too dry and it will not bond.

Working Practices Worth Following

  • Never mix a large batch for repointing. Mix only what you can use in about 45 minutes.
  • Curing is usually unnecessary. Only in very hot, dry or windy conditions, and then a gentle water mist is enough.
  • Protect from freezing for the first 48 hours. Use plastic sheeting or insulation blankets if it may drop below 32 F.
  • Expect some colour variation. Mix water, mix time, curing conditions and finishing all shift the final shade.
  • Wear impervious gloves, nitrile for example. Wet cement burns skin.

A Note on Water Behind Walls

Excess moisture trapped behind a masonry wall causes deterioration of the wall and rusting of any metal components in it. If you are repointing because water is getting in, find and fix the source rather than relying on the mortar to hold it back.
