STICKYSTONE: What is it and how do I use it?

From a first glimpse at the term STICKYSTONE, it seems intuitive to think “Well, that must mean some kind of agent that helps stones stick together.” And I must admit, this definition is not far off! Technically speaking, STICKYSTONE, sometimes called STICKYSTONE sausage, is an adhesive that bonds materials. Nevertheless, this definition does not do justice to the versatility of this tool! STICKYSTONE does make for an excellent stone adhesive. However, it also binds together porcelain tile, brick, outdoor glass, gypsum board/drywall, wood, concrete paver, and many other construction substrates. STICKYSTONE is not “sticky”; this vertical hardscape adhesive creates sleek yet durable attachments.

And it just keeps getting better! STICKYSTONE is a vertical veneer adhesive, perfect for fire pits, outdoor kitchens, columns, and other similar installations. It is weather-resistant, resists sagging, leaves no waste or mess, and has top-notch initial grab strength. This bonding agent is also straightforward and quick to work with, especially if you use our highly rated STICKYSTONE gun.

Can’t wait to get some STICKYSTONE now, can you? Well, thankfully, we have the leading selection of STICKYSTONE at your fingertips. Plus, a free step-by-step guide on using it and a few tips to help you achieve the best possible installation! So, without further ado...

Here are the eight steps you should follow when applying your new STICKYSTONE:

  1. Attach the appropriate nozzle to your STICKYSTONE gun.
  2. Cut the tip of the nozzle to your desired bead size.

The size and quantity of beads you will use to bind the substrates together will depend on the type and weight of the material you are working with. Ensure to apply additional beads to heavier materials.

  1. Place the STICKYSTONE sausage into the gun.
  2. Cut the foil surrounding the top of the STICKYSTONE sausage.
  3. Apply the beads.

You are encouraged to apply the STICKYSTONE only to one of the surfaces in vertical/parallel beads spaced approximately three inches apart. One of the surfaces must be porous to allow this moisture-curing adhesive to set.

  1. Carefully and precisely press the other surface/material onto these beads so the two substrates can bind together.
  2. For the bottom, foundational row, give the beads at least 15 minutes to cure before moving on to the higher rows.
  3. Make any necessary adjustments to the adhesion site in the first 15–30 minutes.

These adjustments could involve shifting the substrate for aesthetic purposes or, more importantly, removing any excess adhesive that creeps through the cracks between the substrates within the first 10–15 minutes of its application.

Tips on how to use STICKYSTONE

  • Dry-fit the materials before adding adhesive.
  • Ensure you are working with dry, clean, frost-free surfaces.
  • Prepare non-porous surfaces for optimal adhesion by roughening them.
  • Start with a small sample of materials to achieve a firmer grip.
  • Sliding around and tapping the veneer material while positioning it improves adhesion.
  • Determine if your substrates require primer before applying STICKYSTONE, and if so, apply the primer.
  • Use shims to hold the material you are bonding in place during installation to avoid sagging.
  • Install in temperatures above 32 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure proper adhesive curing.
  • To conserve unused STICKYSTONE for future use, dispense half an inch of the adhesive and let it dry. All you need to do next time is remove the dried-up piece!
