Why Contractors Ask for HP NextGel by Name
Most polymeric sand failures trace back to three things: haze left on the paver, the sand washing out before it sets, and the joint breaking down under traffic. HP NextGel was engineered against all three.
- No haze, and that is the manufacturer’s claim, not ours. Techniseal calls NextGel the first true “no dust, no haze, no waste” jointing sand. Haze is the single most common callback on a polymeric sand job, and it is almost always the installer’s reputation that pays for it.
- It sets in minutes, not hours. HP NextGel starts to set a few minutes after water activation and becomes resistant to water erosion quickly, including rain, splashes, and sprinklers. That shrinks the window in which a surprise shower ruins a day of paver work.
- Rated for heavy vehicular. Techniseal lists pedestrian, light vehicular and heavy vehicular traffic. That covers driveways, commercial entries, and industrial installs, not just patios.

Where HP NextGel Should NOT Be Used (Straight From the Manufacturer)
Mechanical compaction is required. Techniseal rates HP NextGel with mechanical compaction. If your install cannot be plate compacted, you need their NOCO no-compaction product instead, not this one.
Do not use it on joints narrower than 1/16 in or wider than 4 in. Outside that range you are outside the rated product.
Do not water activate before the surface and joints are swept completely clean. Sand left on the paver face is what causes residue, even with a no-haze formula.
Read the technical data sheet for the current temperature and weather window before you start. Techniseal states plainly that where the website and the TDS differ, the TDS wins.

How to Install HP NextGel
Follow the official Techniseal installation guide, linked below. This is the shape of the job:
- Confirm the pavers are laid, the surface is clean, and the joints are dry and free of debris.
- Pour the sand out and sweep it into the joints, working it fully to the bottom. HP is formulated to flow down rather than bridge.
- Plate compact the surface so the sand settles, then refill the joints and compact again as needed.
- Sweep and blow the surface completely clean. Every grain off the paver face before water touches it.
- Water activate per the technical data sheet, working in manageable sections and starting at the low point.
- Give it the initial set. HP begins setting within minutes and gains water erosion resistance quickly.
- Keep traffic off through the cure period specified in the TDS.
The single biggest determinant of how the job looks in a year is how clean the surface was when the water hit it. That is true of every polymeric sand, and it is still true of a no-haze one.
HP NextGel or SmartSand?
Techniseal makes this call for you in their own literature:
- HP NextGel for vehicular traffic, high humidity, steep slopes, porcelain and large slab work, and joints out to 4 in. The high performance option.
- SmartSand for everyday paver installations not exposed to substantial vehicular circulation. Techniseal calls it the cost-effective alternative.
- If a car will drive on it, or if it is near a pool, HP is the answer. For a standard backyard patio, SmartSand will do the job for less.
