Seam Tape With a Laminated Moisture Barrier

Polypropylene seaming tape with a laminated underside that blocks moisture wicking up from the gravel base β€” the reason a properly taped seam does not peel apart in year three. 213 lb grab tensile, 1 ft wide, in 100 ft and 300 ft rolls. Adhesive sold separately.

Why Contractors Ask for Gator XTurf Seam Tape by Name

The seam is where artificial turf fails. Get it right and the lawn reads as one continuous surface. Get it wrong and you have a visible line that lifts at the edges every spring.

  • Laminated bottom acts as a moisture barrier against water absorption from the foundation gravel. This is what separates it from plain fabric tape.
  • 950 N (213 lb) grab tensile strength and 1,500 N (337 lb) static puncture resistance.
  • Dotted center line as an alignment guide so the seam lands straight.
  • Non-porous. Prevents adhesive seeping through to the base.
  • Rated for more than 100 years in natural soil at pH 4 to 9, resistant to naturally occurring alkalis and acid soils.
  • Two roll lengths so you are not splicing a small job or running short on a large one.

One roll covers its own length in seam: 100 ft or 300 ft. Measure the total linear footage of every seam in your layout, not the perimeter, and add a little for the ends.

Where Gator XTurf Seam Tape Works

Alliance rates XTurf Seam Tape for:

  • Residential artificial turf, front and back yard
  • Landscape turf seams
  • Putting green seams

Where Gator XTurf Seam Tape Should NOT Be Used (Straight From the Manufacturer)

Avoid using in the rain or on standing water.

Keep it wrapped until use, and cover installed tape within 30 days to avoid UV exposure.

Do not let glue bleed into the middle of the seam. If it does, clean it immediately with acetone or thinner.

Do not brush the turf until the glue has set 3 to 4 hours.

The tape carries no adhesive of its own. You need Gator Block Bond XP and Gator XTurf Nails separately.

How to Seam Artificial Turf

The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Lay the tape laminated side down on the gravel, centering the black dotted line between the two turf edges, and nail the ends.
  2. Apply Gator Block Bond XP with a glue gun in a linear or serpentine pattern, about 1 in inside each turf edge.
  3. Close the seam like a zipper, pulling the two edges together evenly and leaving a 1/8 to 1/4 in gap.
  4. Press and roll. Press firmly at the ends, work back along the joint to drive the adhesive into the tuft bases, roll the seam, and put two XTurf Nails at each end.
  5. Cover the joint with infill sand and leave the glue 3 to 4 hours before brushing.

The turf is repositionable for up to 30 minutes while the polyurethane is still open.

Why Seams Fail, and What the Laminate Is For

Almost every peeled seam comes down to moisture or impatience.

  • Moisture from below. A plain fabric tape wicks water up out of the gravel and into the glue line. The laminated underside is specifically there to stop that.
  • Brushing too early. Block Bond XP needs 3 to 4 hours. Power-brooming at two hours drags the seam open.
  • Glue in the seam. Adhesive that squeezes up between the edges hardens into a visible ridge. Keep the bead an inch inside each edge.
  • No gap. Butting the two edges hard together makes the seam bulge. Leave 1/8 to 1/4 in.
  • Gluing in the rain. Block Bond XP is moisture cured, so water shortens your open time rather than helping.

Quick Answers

Does the tape come with adhesive?
No. It is a non-adhesive tape. Alliance specifies Gator Block Bond XP adhesive, sold separately.

Which side goes down?
The laminated side, against the gravel. That laminate is the moisture barrier.

How wide is it?
1 ft (30 cm), in 100 ft and 300 ft roll lengths.

How long before I can brush the turf?
3 to 4 hours, until the glue has set. Brushing earlier pulls the seam apart.

Should the turf edges touch?
No. Leave a 1/8 to 1/4 in gap and close it like a zipper from one end.

Can I install it in the rain?
No. Alliance says avoid rain and standing water, and the polyurethane adhesive cures faster than you want in wet conditions.

How long will the tape last?
Alliance rates it at over 100 years in natural soil at pH 4 to 9. Cover it within 30 days of installation to avoid UV exposure.
