Why Contractors Ask for Gator Maxx Sand by Name
Most polymeric sands forbid overlay work. Gator Maxx Sand is the one Alliance rates for pavers laid over an existing concrete slab, which is why contractors keep it on the truck alongside the traditional grades.

Where Gator Maxx Sand Should NOT Be Used (Straight From the Manufacturer)
On an overlay, ICPI Tech Spec 10 requires 2 in drainage holes roughly every 10 ft. Skip the drainage and water has nowhere to go.
Do not apply if the paver surface or the joints are damp or wet. Everything must be 100 percent dry.
Do not sweep it over asphalt. Do not apply on aggregates with large voids.
Pavers must be fully interlocked before you sand. Pool coping units must be mortared, not sanded.
Joints must be filled to at least 1/8 in below the paver surface or chamfer, and cured joints should never sit in direct contact with foot traffic or tires.

How to Install Gator Maxx Sand
The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:
- Spread. the polymeric sand with a hard-bristle broom and fill the joints completely, leaving a layer on the surface to help it vibrate in.
- Vibrate. with a plate compactor fitted with a rubber pad. Expect 30 to 50 percent of the sand to drop on the first pass, then top up and repeat. Never skip this step.
- Sweep clean. hard broom first, then soft, until not a grain is left on the paver faces. This is the step that prevents haze.
- Activate with water. on a shower setting, starting at the lowest point, until the joints hold water without flooding.
Install above 32 F on a completely dry surface. Rain safe in 1 hour on a traditional base, 24 hours on an overlay.
Do I Need Overlay-Rated Polymeric Sand?
If your pavers sit on compacted aggregate, any Alliance sand in the right joint range works. If they sit on a concrete slab, you are doing an overlay, and most polymeric sands are explicitly prohibited there because trapped water has nowhere to drain. Only two Alliance sands are overlay rated:
- Gator Maxx Sand β overlay joints to 2 in.
- Gator Maxx G2 β overlay joints to 2 in, traditional joints to 4 in, and a faster 15 minute rain-safe window.
- Super Sand Bond and Super Sand G2 are traditional base only and must not be used on an overlay.

How many bags do I need?
On tight 1/8 in to 3/8 in joints, one 50 lb bag covers 65 to 85 sq ft. On wider 3/4 in to 1-1/4 in joints it drops to 22 to 42 sq ft. Our calculator sizes it for your job.
Will polymeric sand haze my pavers?
Not if you sweep and blow the surface completely clean before you add water. Haze comes from sand left sitting on the paver face.
Can I use it around a pool?
Yes, pool decks and surrounds are intended applications. Pool coping joints are the exception and must be mortared.
What temperature do I need?
Above 32 F (0 C), on a surface that is completely dry.
Can I use it over a concrete slab?
Yes. This is one of only two Alliance polymeric sands rated for overlay work, and the overlay joint maximum is 2 in.
How soon can it rain?
One hour on a traditional install, but 24 hours if you are doing an overlay.
Maxx Sand or Maxx G2?
Both handle overlays. Maxx G2 goes wider on traditional joints, up to 4 in, and is rain safe in 15 minutes rather than an hour.
