Why Contractors Ask for Gator Maxx G2 by Name
Wide paver joints are where ordinary jointing sand gives up: it washes out in the first storm, weeds move in, and the patio starts shifting. Gator Maxx G2 is the polymeric sand grade built for exactly that job.
- Fills joints up to 4 inches. Traditional installations take joints from 1/8 in right up to 4 in wide; overlay applications up to 2 in.
- No dust and haze free. The G2 intelligent polymeric formula sweeps clean, so you are not scrubbing white polymeric haze off the paver faces afterward.
- One watering. A single activation instead of the multi-pass soak older polymeric sands need, which means fewer chances to over-water and wash out the joints.
- Rain safe in 15 minutes. On a traditional install you are clear of the weather window fast, which matters in spring and fall.
- No blower required. Less equipment on the truck and no risk of blowing sand back out of the joints.
- ASTM C144 gradation. Graded to pack tight joints properly, and OSHA crystalline silica compliant.
- 15 year residential warranty. One year commercial, backed by Alliance Gator.

Where Gator Maxx G2 Works
Alliance recommends Gator Maxx G2 polymeric sand for concrete pavers and natural stone, on traditional or overlay base systems:
- Paver patios and pool decks
- Driveways and parking areas
- Walkways, footpaths and garden paths
- Commercial hardscape and pavements
- Natural stone and flagstone with joints up to 4 in
Where Gator Maxx G2 Should NOT Be Used (Straight From the Manufacturer)
Per Alliance, Gator Maxx G2 must not be swept over asphalt, and must not be applied to wet or damp pavers or joints.
Do not install at 32 F (0 C) or below. Clay pavers require a test on a dry surface first.
Joints need a minimum depth of 1-1/2 in and a minimum width of 1/8 in. Pavers must be fully interlocked and the base must meet ICPI specification.
Plan for at least a 2% slope so water runs off the surface. Pool coping joints must be mortared, not sanded.

How to Install Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand
The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:
- Spread. the polymeric sand across a completely dry paver surface.
- Sweep and vibrate. it fully into the joints, compacting with a plate compactor so the sand settles and you can top up any low joints.
- Sweep off. every last grain from the paver faces before water touches it. This step is what prevents haze.
- Activate with water. on a shower setting, a minimum of 30 seconds per 30 sq ft, until the joints are saturated but not flooded.
Install above 32 F on a dry surface with at least a 2% slope, and always test in a small discrete area first.
Gator Maxx G2 vs Super Sand G2 vs Maxx Sand: Which Polymeric Sand Do I Need?
All three are Alliance polymeric sands and all three install the same way. The difference is the joint width they are rated for:
- Super Sand Bond β joints up to 1 in. The tight-joint choice for standard concrete pavers.
- Super Sand G2 and Maxx Sand β joints up to 2 in.
- Gator Maxx G2 β joints up to 4 in, the widest of the polymeric sands, and the one to use on irregular natural stone.
- Gator Dust Bond β joints up to 6 in, a polymeric stone dust rather than a sand, for wide flagstone joints.
Choosing a Joint Sand Color
Color is the part customers change their mind about, so it is worth a sample board before you buy a pallet.
- Beige β the safe default with tan, buff and autumn-blend pavers.
- Slate Grey β the everyday choice with grey and charcoal concrete pavers.
- Ivory β lifts lighter stone and cream pavers without going stark white.
- Black Diamond β a deliberate dark contrast joint. Note it covers slightly less per bag than the other three.
Quick Answers
How wide a joint can Gator Maxx G2 fill?
Up to 4 in on a traditional installation and up to 2 in on an overlay, with a 1/8 in minimum either way and a 1-1/2 in minimum joint depth.
How many bags of polymeric sand do I need?
On narrow 1/8 in to 3/8 in joints one 50 lb bag covers 65 to 85 sq ft. On wide 3/4 in to 1-1/4 in joints it drops to 22 to 42 sq ft. Our calculator will size it for your exact job.
Will polymeric sand haze my pavers?
Not if you sweep the surface completely clean before you add water. Gator Maxx G2 is a haze free formula, but loose sand left sitting on the paver face is what causes haze in any polymeric sand.
Can I use it on a pool deck?
Yes, pool decks are an intended application. The coping joints are the exception and must be mortared rather than sanded.
How soon can it rain after installation?
15 minutes on a traditional install. An overlay application needs 24 hours.
Can I use Gator Maxx G2 on natural stone or flagstone?
Yes. It is rated for concrete pavers and natural stone, and the 4 in joint rating is what makes it the usual pick for irregular flagstone.
Does it work over an existing concrete slab?
Yes, that is the overlay application, but the joint rating drops to 2 in and it needs 24 hours before rain.
What temperature do I need?
Above 32 F (0 C) for installation and cure, on a surface that is completely dry.
