ASTM No. 9 Granite for Permeable Paver Joints and Bedding

Fractured high-strength granite calibrated to ASTM No. 9 gradation β€” the jointing and bedding aggregate permeable paver systems are designed around. Rated for residential and commercial traffic, and it also works as the no-compaction bedding under Gator Base. 50 lb bags.

Why Contractors Ask for Gator Aqua Rock by Name

Permeable pavers only work if the joints stay open. Ordinary sand blinds them off within a season. ASTM No. 9 chip stone is the specified material, and Aqua Rock is Alliance's calibrated version.

  • Graded to meet ASTM No. 9, the gradation permeable paver systems are specified around.
  • High strength fractured granite, which locks together rather than rolling like rounded stone.
  • Residential and commercial traffic rated, including driveways and parking lots.
  • Reduces storm water runoff and helps prevent erosion.
  • Doubles as bedding under Gator Base and needs no compaction there, unlike a sand bed.
  • Calibrated for the majority of permeable pavers.

20 to 25 sq ft per 50 lb bag on a standard 2-3/8 in paver, varying with paver shape and joint width. Larger jobs are far cheaper by the super-sack β€” call or text (856) 418-4895.

Where Gator Aqua Rock Works

Alliance rates Gator Aqua Rock for:

  • Permeable paver joints
  • Bedding course under permeable pavers
  • Driveways, parking lots, patios and walkways
  • Concrete pavers and wet cast products
  • Foundation material under Gator Base, with no compaction needed

Where Gator Aqua Rock Should NOT Be Used (Straight From the Manufacturer)

No mud or sediment may be left on the base or bedding. Contaminated material must be removed and replaced, not just raked over.

Do not walk or drive on screeded bedding before paving starts.

Minimum 0.5 percent subgrade slope and 1 percent finished surface slope.

Cut pavers no smaller than one third of a whole unit. Take care not to damage drainpipes during compaction.

How to Install Gator Aqua Rock

The full step by step guide is in the official documentation below. Here is the shape of the job:

  1. Spread the bedding over the base course at 50 mm thickness.
  2. Screed to plus or minus 10 mm over a 3 m straight edge, and keep all traffic off it until paving starts.
  3. Lay the pavers, edge cuts no smaller than one third of a unit, at 45 degrees to traffic on vehicular work.
  4. Sweep Aqua Rock into the joints and sweep the paver faces clean of excess.
  5. Compact with a low amplitude 75 to 90 Hz plate of at least 4,000 lb centrifugal force, minimum two passes.
  6. Check the joints are filled to 3 mm from the paver top and top up or remove as needed.

Why Permeable Systems Use Chip Stone, Not Sand

A permeable paver only performs if water can get through the joint, and that is entirely down to what is in it.

  • Sand blinds the joint. Fines migrate down, fill the voids and the surface stops draining within a season or two.
  • ASTM No. 9 chip stone has almost no fines by design β€” 0 to 5 percent passing the No. 50 sieve β€” so the voids stay open.
  • Fractured, not rounded. Angular granite interlocks and resists rutting. Rounded pea gravel rolls.
  • Same material top and bottom. Aqua Rock works as both bedding and joint fill, which keeps the system consistent.

Quick Answers

What is ASTM No. 9 stone?
A specified aggregate gradation, roughly 3/8 in down, with almost no fines. It is what permeable interlocking paver systems are designed around.

How much does a bag cover?
20 to 25 sq ft on a 2-3/8 in paver, varying with paver shape and joint width. The 2,200 lb super-sack does 880 to 1,100 sq ft.

Can I use it on a driveway?
Yes, it is rated for residential and commercial traffic including parking lots.

Can I use it under Gator Base?
Yes, and it is the easier option there because it needs no compaction, unlike a sand bed.

Why not just use polymeric sand?
Polymeric sand is designed to seal the joint. In a permeable system you want the opposite β€” water moving through it.

What compactor do I need?
Low amplitude, 75 to 90 Hz, at least 4,000 lb centrifugal force, minimum two passes.
