What Is Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand?
Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand is in a completely different category from every other jointing product we carry. It is not a water activated polymeric sand or traditional paver jointing sand. it is an air cure resin jointing material. Instead of being activated by water, Gator Nitro cures on its own as it is exposed to air, hardening from the top of the joint all the way to the bottom. This means you can install Gator Nitro Joint Sand in wet or dry weather without worrying about rain washing the product out mid-job.
Gator Nitro Joint Sand is a ready to use mixture of calibrated sand and proprietary resin formula sold in a 40 lb pail. Once cured, Gator Nitro Joint Sand creates an extremely hard and firm joint that continues to harden over time. It is the product of choice when you need porcelain tile compatibility, want an all-weather installation window, or need a proven rigid joint on concrete pavers, natural stone, or wet cast stone.
Available in Beige, Grey, Black, and Silver. Gator Nitro Joint Sand works on drainage base systems only. Joints from 3/16 inch to 2 inches for concrete pavers, natural stone, and wet cast stone. Joints from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch for outdoor porcelain tile (must use Gator Tile System). Walk on the surface after 18 hours. Full strength achieved at 28 days.
Important: Gator Nitro Joint Sand requires the surface to be pre wet and kept wet throughout the entire installation process or staining may occur. There must be absolutely no paver, stone, or tile movement prior to installation. Any movement will void the warranty and crack the joints. Drainage base only. Cannot be used on non-drainage bases.

Is Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand the Right Jointing Material for Your Project?
Drainage base only. No overlay. No heavy vehicular traffic. Gator Nitro cannot be used on non-drainage bases or over concrete slabs. For overlay-capable products see Gator Maxx G2. Pavers or stones must have zero movement before installation or joints will crack.
Outdoor porcelain tile and porcelain pavers The primary reason most hardscape installers and contractors choose Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand. Porcelain tile must be installed using the Gator Tile System with minimum joint depth of 3/4 inch. Joint width 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch only for porcelain.
Concrete pavers. pedestrian and light vehicular Approved for interlocking concrete pavers on a drainage base for pedestrian and light vehicular traffic (passenger vehicles up to 7,700 lbs total loaded weight). Pavers must be fully interlocked with no movement prior to application.
Natural stone and wet cast stone. pedestrian Works for natural stone and wet cast stone patios, walkways, and pool surrounds on a drainage base. Pedestrian applications only for these surfaces.
Pool decks and pool surrounds Recommended for paver, stone, and porcelain tile pool deck installations on drainage base. A slope of 1/8 inch per linear foot away from the pool is mandatory. Pool coping joints must use mortar. Nitro is for the surrounding surface field only.
Any-weather installations The only Alliance jointing product that can be installed in wet or dry weather. If rain or wet conditions frequently interrupt your install schedule, Gator Nitro Joint Sand eliminates that variable entirely.
Not for non-drainage bases or overlays Cannot be used on non-drainage base systems or over concrete slabs. Not rated for heavy commercial vehicle traffic. Not for large aggregate bases with open voids. product will migrate downward.
What Makes Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand Different from Regular Polymeric Sand?
Air-cure resin formula. Install rain or shine Unlike every water activated polymeric sand, Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand cures by air exposure from the top down. This means you can install in wet or dry conditions with no concern about rain washing product out of the joints during or after installation.
Porcelain tile compatible Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand is one of the very few jointing materials approved for outdoor porcelain tiles and porcelain pavers when used with the Gator Tile System. This is the primary reason most professionals choose Nitro over polymeric sand.
Extremely hard and rigid joint Gator Nitro Joint Sand creates one of the hardest joints available in hardscape jointing. The resin formula sets firm and continues to harden and strengthen over time, getting more durable as the installation ages.
Permeable when installed Gator Nitro Joint Sand maintains permeability after curing, allowing water to pass through the joint system. This is an important characteristic for drainage-dependent installations.
Walk on in 18 hours After installing Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand, the paved surface can be used for pedestrian traffic just 18 hours later. Full strength is achieved at 28 days.
Resistant to pool chlorine and de-icing salts Testing showed no deterioration after 7 days of immersion in pool chlorine and de-icing salt solutions, making it well suited for pool surround installations in cold climates.
Four color options Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand is available in Beige, Grey, Black, and Silver, with more color options than any other Alliance jointing product, making it easy to match a wide range of paver and tile colors.
Leftover product can be stored in the pail Unused Gator Nitro Joint Sand can be stored directly in the pail by covering with 2 inches of water and sealing tightly. Stored this way, leftover product can last an additional 4 weeks.
Working time notice: Gator Nitro Joint Sand must be applied within approximately 45 minutes of opening. Plan your installation in sections to stay within this working time window.
What Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand Helps Prevent
The resin-bonded joint created by Gator Nitro is among the hardest and most durable in the hardscape industry. Here is what a properly installed Nitro joint keeps out:
Weeds growing through joints The hard resin-bonded joint leaves no soil or loose material for weed seeds to establish, making weed growth through properly installed Nitro joints extremely rare.
Insect and ant damage The Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand rigid cured joint is impenetrable to ants and burrowing insects, protecting the base from the destabilization that causes pavers and stones to sink over time.
Joint erosion and washout The Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand resin bond permanently secures the jointing material in place against rain, surface runoff, and weather. Unlike polymeric sand, the air cure formula is not disturbed by rainfall during or after installation.
Paver and stone shifting The Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand rigid extremely hard joint locks pavers and stones in place under pedestrian and light vehicular loads, maintaining a stable surface through seasonal movement.
Chlorine and de-icing salt damage Testing confirmed no deterioration after 7 days of immersion in pool chlorine and de-icing salt, making Nitro particularly durable in pool and cold-climate environments.
Note: Gator Nitro Joint Sand does not prevent moss, mold, or mildew. Those result from on-site conditions including excess moisture, shade, and poor drainage. Gator Nitro Joint Sand will detach from pavers, stones, or tiles if there is excessive sub base movement. Proper sub base preparation is critical to joint performance.
Gator Nitro Joint Sand Available Colors
Gator Nitro Joint Sand is available in four colors: Beige, Grey, Black, and Silver, with more options than any other Alliance jointing product. This gives you the flexibility to closely match a wide range of paver, stone, and porcelain tile colors. We strongly recommend ordering physical color samples before purchasing full pails to confirm the right match for your project.
Not sure which color matches your surface?Order our sample pack so you can test each color against your actual pavers, stone, or tile in real outdoor light before committing to full pails.
How Many Pails of Gator Nitro Joint Sand Do You Need?
Coverage with Gator Nitro varies more dramatically than any other jointing product we carry. This is the most important thing to understand before ordering. A 40 lb pail covers over 500 square feet on narrow 1/8 inch porcelain tile joints, but only 10 to 12 square feet on wider 1 inch concrete paver joints. Getting your joint width right before calculating is critical.
Do not estimate without knowing your exact joint width. The difference between a 3/16 inch and a 3/4 inch joint is roughly 40 pails per 500 sq ft project. Call us at (856) 418-4895 and we will help you calculate your exact pail count before you order.

Critical pre-installation requirements: Temperature must be above 37°F (3°C). Drainage base only. Cannot be used on non-drainage bases. Surface must be pre wet and kept wet throughout installation or staining will occur. There must be zero paver, stone, or tile movement before you begin. any movement will crack the joints and void the warranty. Test on a 4 sq ft area first.
1
Pre wet the entire paved surface
Thoroughly wet the area to be jointed before opening the pails. The surface must remain wet throughout the entire installation process. If the surface is dry or temperature is high, more water will be required to avoid staining when spreading Nitro. Do not let the surface dry out at any point during installation.
2
Spread and work Gator Nitro into joints
Open the pails and spread the contents over the wet paved surface. While wetting the Nitro with a hose set to shower, use a squeegee or broom to push it diagonally across the paved surface and into the joints. This action compacts and forces the Nitro into the joints ensuring they are completely filled. Work within 45 minute sections to stay within the working time window.
3
Fill joints to the correct depth
Joints should be filled to within 1/8 inch below the top surface of the paver or stone, or 1/8 inch below the chamfer edge. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until joints are completely filled to the correct level. Shower the surface to rinse off excess material between passes.
4
Clean surface residue with brushing and rinsing
Any excess Nitro residue left on the paved surface can be cleaned off by brushing and rinsing with water. For a smoother joint finish, use a suitable mason jointing tool to smooth the joint surface. This finishing step can only be done once steps 1 through 3 are complete and Nitro is in its curing phase.
5
Allow 18 hours cure time before pedestrian use
Keep foot traffic off the surface for 18 hours after installation. Full strength is achieved at 28 days. Avoid power-washing the surface for a minimum of 28 days after installation. If heavy rain occurs before the joints have set, revisit the job once weather clears to touch up any joints that need additional product.
Do not apply if any of these conditions exist
Temperature is at or below 37°F (3°C)
Non-drainage base installation. Nitro cannot be used without a drainage base
Overlay installation over existing concrete slab
Any paver, stone, or tile movement exists before installation
Base has large aggregate voids. product will migrate downward
Heavy commercial vehicular traffic is anticipated
Porcelain tile not installed with Gator Tile System
Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand joints are very low maintenance once fully cured at 28 days, but there are a few important things to know to keep them performing correctly over time.
Wait 28 days before pressure washing Do not use a pressure washer on the surface for a minimum of 28 days after installing Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand. After 28 days, periodic pressure washing actually helps maintain Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand joint permeability by clearing dirt and debris from the joint surface.
Routine surface cleaning Apply Gator Shampoo or a paver safe cleaner to the Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand surface to the full surface including joints. Rinse with a standard garden hose at shower setting at normal residential pressure around 80 psi. After the 28-day window, this is safe for routine cleaning.
Permeability maintenance Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand is permeable when installed but permeability can be obstructed over time by dirt and debris accumulation. Periodic pressure washing after the initial 28-day cure period helps keep the joint permeable and clear.
Moss, mold, or mildew Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand does not cause or prevent moss, mold, or mildew. These are caused by on-site conditions including excess moisture, shade, and poor ventilation. Treat with a paver-safe cleaner and improve drainage and shade conditions.
Storing unused product Store Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand outdoors under a covered area away from direct sun, or indoors at temperatures from -22 to 86°F (-30 to 30°C). Opened Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand pails with leftover product can be stored by covering with 2 inches of water and sealing tightly. this can extend the usable life of leftover product by up to 4 additional weeks. Pails can be double stacked for storage but not during transport. Shelf life is 24 months in a cool area.
All specifications sourced from the official Alliance Gator Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Always verify the latest TDS at AllianceGator.com before installation. Specifications are subject to change by the manufacturer.

Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand and regular polymeric sand are fundamentally different products. Regular polymeric sand is water activated. you sweep it in dry and activate it with water at the end. Gator Nitro is an air cure resin jointing material. It cures by exposure to air from the top of the joint to the bottom and requires no water activation step. This means you can install Nitro in any weather without concern about rain. Nitro also works on porcelain tile (with Gator Tile System), which polymeric sand cannot do. Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand creates a harder, more rigid joint. The trade-off is that Nitro requires a drainage base only, has a 45 minute working time window, and requires the surface to be pre wet and kept wet during installation.
Yes. Gator Nitro Joint Sand can be installed rain or shine, which is one of its most important advantages over water activated polymeric sands which require dry conditions. Note that heavy rain while Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand joints are setting may require you to revisit the job once weather clears to touch up any joints that need additional product. The air cure process may also be slightly delayed by wet conditions.
Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand contains resins that can stain paver, stone, or tile surfaces if spread over a dry surface. Pre wetting the surface and keeping it wet throughout the entire installation process creates a barrier that prevents the resin from bonding to the surface rather than the joints. This is a critical step that cannot be skipped. Staining from a dry surface is very difficult to remove. If temperatures are high or the surface dries quickly, you may need to re wet more frequently.
Yes. Unlike polymeric sand which requires completely dry joints, Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand works in wet conditions. You should ensure the pavers or stones have no movement before starting. Surface moisture is not a concern with Nitro but base stability always is.
No. Gator Nitro Joint Sand is approved for drainage base applications only. It cannot be used on non-drainage bases or overlay installations over existing concrete slabs. For overlay-compatible products see our Gator Maxx G2 or Gator Maxx Sand listings.
Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand creates an extremely hard and rigid joint. Unlike flexible polymeric sand which can absorb minor movement, a Nitro joint will crack or detach from the paving units if the pavers, stones, or tiles are oscillating or moving due to improper sub base preparation. Any movement before installing Alliance Gator Nitro Joint Sand indicates a sub base problem that must be corrected first. Proceeding on a moving surface will void the warranty and result in failed joints.
