What Is Alliance Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand?
Alliance Gator Maxx G2 polymeric sand is the most versatile polymeric sand in the Alliance Gator lineup and one of the best-selling jointing sands we carry at Polymeric Sand Store. It is engineered to handle wider paver joints, overlay work on existing concrete slabs, and more surface types than any other G2-formula sand Alliance makes.
What separates G2 from standard polymeric sand is the second generation intelligent polymer formula. Once activated with water, those polymers bind the sand tightly into the joint while neutralizing dust and haze. The result is a clean, residue-free application with no leaf blower required. One watering is all it takes to activate.
Once cured, Gator Maxx G2 hardens into a firm but flexible joint that is strong enough to lock pavers against vehicular traffic and weather, and flexible enough to handle freeze thaw temperature swings without cracking out. It is also the only Alliance polymeric sand recommended for overlay installations on existing concrete slabs.
Available in four colors: Beige, Slate Grey, Ivory, and Black Diamond. We strongly recommend ordering physical color samples before committing to full bags.

Is Alliance Gator Maxx G2 the Right Polymeric Sand for Your Project?
Patio pavers Ideal for all standard interlocking concrete paver patios. Handles joints up to 4 inches wide on a traditional gravel base.
Pool decks and pool surrounds Our top recommendation for in-ground pool installations. Requires a minimum 1/8 inch per foot slope away from the pool. Pool coping joints must use mortar. Gator Maxx G2 is for the surrounding paver field only.
Paver driveways and parking areas Handles full vehicular and pedestrian traffic on a traditional gravel base. Sand level must be at least 1/8 inch below the paver surface or chamfer edge. All pavers must be fully interlocked. Fanned pavers do not qualify for vehicular use.
Overlay installations on existing concrete slabs The only Alliance polymeric sand approved for pavers laid over an existing concrete slab. Maximum joint width on overlays is 2 inches. Drainage holes (2 inch diameter, approximately 10 feet apart) must be pre-drilled in the slab, filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with Gator Fabric GF4.4.
Concrete pavers, natural stone, wet cast, and false joint pavers Works across all standard interlocking surfaces. ASTM C144 gradation handles both tight and wide joints.
Clay pavers The moisture-resistant G2 formula reduces the risk of premature activation on clay surfaces. Always test a small area first before proceeding with the full installation.
Commercial streetscapes, steep slopes, and high-traffic hardscapes Approved for commercial hardscape applications including streetscapes and steep slope installations.
Open-graded aggregate bases that lock or choke G2 can be applied when pavers are installed on aggregates that lock or choke themselves. Do not use on aggregates with large open voids, as the polymeric sand will migrate through.
What Makes Alliance Gator Maxx G2 Different from Standard Polymeric Sand?
Alliance Gator Maxx G2 second generation intelligent polymers Chemically neutralize dust and haze during application. No white residue on paver faces after installation.
No blower required Alliance Gator Maxx G2 stays in the joints during application. Skip the leaf blower step entirely, saving significant time and cleanup effort on every job.
Single watering to activate Alliance Gator Maxx G2 requires just one pass with a shower-setting hose is all that is needed. No repeat watering applications required.
Rain safe in 15 minutes Alliance Gator Maxx G2 is rain safe just 15 minutes after water activation. Overlay installations require 24 hours.
Overlay-ready formula The only Alliance polymeric sand approved for pavers installed over existing concrete slabs. The water-repelling formula prevents premature activation caused by moisture from the slab below.
ASTM C144 gradation Works in joints from the tightest 1/8 inch all the way up to 4 inches wide on a traditional base.
OSHA crystalline silica compliant Meets OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153 requirements. Safe for professional contractor use on any job site.
Waterproof bag packaging Store bags lying flat with the front facing up. Intact sealed bags can be safely stored outdoors on a pallet.
Faster installation compared to first generation polymeric sand No blower step, single watering, and a residue-free application all add up to significantly less time on the job for both homeowners and contractors.
What Alliance Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand Helps Prevent
A properly installed Alliance Gator Maxx G2 polymeric sand joint is your best defense against the most common paver problems. Here is what G2 keeps out:
Weeds growing through paver joints Alliance Gator Maxx G2 polymer locked joints leave no loose soil for weed seeds to take root. A properly installed and maintained G2 joint makes weed growth through the pavers rare.
Ant tunneling and insect damage Ants cannot tunnel through a fully cured polymeric sand joint. This prevents the base destabilization that causes pavers to sink and shift over time.
Joint erosion and washout from rain Regular paver sand washes out after heavy rain. Alliance Gator Maxx G2's polymer bond holds the jointing material firmly in place, resisting erosion from rain and surface runoff.
Freeze-thaw cracking Alliance Gator Maxx G2 remains flexible after curing, allowing it to expand and contract with seasonal temperature changes rather than cracking and failing in cold climates.
Paver shifting and movement Tightly locked joints keep the entire paver surface stable under foot traffic, vehicular loads, and ground movement.
White haze and dust residue on pavers The Alliance Gator Maxx G2 formula is the key upgrade over first generation polymeric sands. Intelligent polymers neutralize residue so paver faces stay clean after application.
Note: G2 does not prevent moss, mold, or mildew. Those result from shade, moisture retention, and drainage conditions on site. Treat with a paver-safe cleaner and improve drainage to address them.

Minimum joint depth: 1-1/2 inches (38 mm). The entire joint depth must be filled with G2. Coverage is based on standard pavers 2-3/8 inches (6 cm) tall. Actual coverage varies by joint width, depth, and paver size. Source: Alliance Gator official TDS. Always order 10 to 15 percent extra.
The single most common Alliance Gator Maxx G2 installation mistake is starting on pavers that are not fully dry. Any moisture will prematurely activate the polymers and cause them to stick to the paver surface, leaving white residue that is very difficult to remove. Wait for a fully dry day. Pavers that have been pressure washed or rained on need at least 24 to 48 hours to dry completely. Both the paver surfaces and the joints must be bone dry before beginning.
Overlay installs: drainage holes (2 inch diameter, spaced approximately 10 feet apart at the lowest slab elevations) must be in place, filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with a 1 ft x 1 ft patch of Gator Fabric GF4.4 before applying G2.
2
Spread and sweep polymeric sand into all joints
Pour G2 onto the dry paver surface and use a hard bristle broom to sweep it into the joints, working in multiple directions. Work in sections and make multiple passes to ensure full joint penetration. Leave a thin layer of sand on top of the pavers for the compaction step. Narrow joints require additional sweeping passes to fill completely.
3
Compact with a plate compactor
Run a vibratory plate compactor equipped with a rubber protective pad over the entire paved surface. Work in multiple directions to eliminate air pockets and fully pack the joints. After compacting, sweep additional G2 into any joints that need topping off, then compact again. The final sand level must sit at least 1/8 inch below the top of the paver surface or 1/8 inch below the chamfer edge. The cured sand joint should never be in direct contact with foot traffic or tire traffic.
On textured or pre-finished paver surfaces: clear all sand from the paver face before compacting to avoid scratching or damaging the surface.
4
Sweep off all surface excess. no leaf blower needed
Use a hard bristle broom followed by a soft broom to remove all remaining sand from the paver surfaces. With Gator Maxx G2 you stop here. No leaf blower step is required. The G2 formula stays in the joints and does not leave residue that needs to be blown off, unlike older first generation polymeric sands.
5
Activate with water. shower setting, section by section
Set your hose nozzle to the shower setting. Start at the lowest point of the installation and work upward. Water each 30 square foot section for approximately 30 seconds until the G2 surface repels water and it begins pooling on the joints. That pooling is the sign that the polymers are activating. Move immediately to the next section. Do not over water. Standing water will wash sand out of the joints.
On slopes and pool surrounds: always start watering at the lowest point and work upward. Starting at the top will pull sand downhill and cause uneven activation.
6
Stay off until fully cured
On a traditional gravel base, the installation is rain safe in 15 minutes, but keep foot traffic and vehicles off until the joints are fully cured. On overlay installations, the installation is rain safe after 24 hours. The joints will develop a firm crust on top after curing. This is completely normal and by design. The cured sand joint should never be in direct contact with foot or tire traffic until fully set.
Do not apply if any of these conditions exist
Paver surfaces or joints are damp or wet in any way
Temperature is at or below 32°F (0°C)
Rain is expected within 15 minutes of activation on a traditional base, or within 24 hours on an overlay
Pavers are installed on aggregates with large open voids, as the sand will migrate through
Pavers are installed on asphalt. Do not sweep G2 over asphalt surfaces
Pavers are fanned rather than fully interlocked. Fanned pavers do not qualify for vehicular use
Clay pavers without first testing a small area to confirm compatibility
Long Term Maintenance for Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand Paver Joints
Alliance Gator Maxx G2 polymeric sand is significantly lower maintenance than regular paver joint sand, but it is not completely maintenance free. Here is exactly what to do to keep your paver joints in top condition for years to come.
Routine cleaning Apply Gator Shampoo or a paver-safe cleaner to the full paver surface including the joints. Rinse with a garden hose on the shower setting at standard residential water pressure, typically up to 80 psi. No pressure washer is required or recommended directly on the joints.
White haze on pavers Usually caused by efflorescence from the pavers themselves triggered during water activation, or by polymer residue from applying G2 on a surface that was not fully dry. Treat with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. The haze also fades naturally over time with weathering and sun exposure.
Moss, mold, or mildew These are drainage and shade issues, not a sand problem. Treat the surface with a paver-safe cleaner. For long term prevention, improve drainage and reduce shade over the paved area.
Re-sanding worn joints Remove all old jointing material completely before re applying. Do not apply new G2 on top of old polymeric sand, as this will prevent proper bonding. Pavers must be fully dry before starting. Then follow the standard six-step installation process from the beginning.
Storing leftover bags Alliance Gator Maxx G2 comes in waterproof bags. Lay bags flat with the front facing up. Sealed intact bags can be safely stored outdoors on a pallet until needed.

Yes. Gator Maxx G2 is the only Alliance polymeric sand engineered specifically for overlay applications. Its water-repelling formula prevents premature activation from moisture in the concrete slab. The maximum joint width on overlays is 2 inches versus 4 inches on a traditional gravel base. The installation is rain safe 24 hours after activation on overlays. Drainage holes must be pre-drilled in the slab (2 inch diameter, spaced approximately 10 feet apart at the lowest points), filled with 3/8 inch stone, and covered with Gator Fabric GF4.4.
Both products use Alliance's second generation intelligent polymer technology. The key difference is joint width capacity and overlay capability. Gator Super Sand G2 handles joints up to 2 inches on a traditional gravel base only and cannot be used on overlays. Gator Maxx G2 handles joints up to 4 inches on a traditional base and up to 2 inches on concrete slab overlays. If your joints are under 1 inch and you have no overlay situation, Super Sand G2 is a practical and cost-effective choice. If your joints are wider or you are working over an existing concrete slab, Maxx G2 is the correct product. Not sure which one fits your project? Call us at (856) 418-4895.
Yes, this is completely normal and it is exactly how G2 is designed to perform. The cured top layer forms a firm protective crust that spans from chamfer edge to chamfer edge. The densely compacted sand below provides the structural support. This is not a sign of installation failure.
White residue after installation is almost always one of two things: efflorescence from the pavers themselves triggered by water activation, which is very common and completely natural, or polymer residue caused by applying G2 on a surface that was not completely dry. Both respond well to Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. The haze also fades naturally over time with weather exposure. Call us at (856) 418-4895 if the problem persists after treatment.
No. This is strongly advised against by both the manufacturer and our team. The entire joint depth of at least 1-1/2 inches must be filled with G2. If regular paver sand is used below, water and ice will penetrate from underneath and push the G2 layer out over time, causing the joint to fail prematurely.
The polymers will not cure properly in freezing temperatures. This leaves the jointing sand weak and unable to lock your pavers in place. Wait until air temperatures are consistently above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, including overnight temperatures during the full curing period, before applying.
No, and this is one of the biggest advantages G2 has over older polymeric sands. The intelligent polymer formula does not leave residue on the paver face, so a standard broom sweep before watering is all that is needed. No blower, no extra equipment, and no extra cleanup time.
Polymeric sand is jointing sand mixed with polymer binders. When activated with water, those polymers harden the sand inside the joint, locking pavers firmly in place and resisting weeds, insects, and erosion. Regular paver sand has no binders, so it washes out after rain, allows ants to burrow freely through the joints, and requires constant replenishment over time. Polymeric sand is a long lasting solution when installed correctly.
