What Is Gator Nitro-X Fine Joint Sand?
Gator Nitro-X Fine Joint Sand is Alliance Designer Products' air-cure resin jointing material — and it's in a completely different category from standard polymeric sand. Instead of activating with water, Nitro-X cures on its own as it's exposed to air, hardening from the top of the joint all the way to the bottom. That means you can install it in wet or dry conditions without worrying about rain washing it out mid-job. It's one of the most advanced hardscape jointing materials on the market for both concrete pavers and outdoor porcelain tile.
The formula uses extra-fine calibrated sand combined with a proprietary resin system. What you get is a dense, extremely hard paver joint filler that locks pavers, natural stone, and wet cast stone tightly in place. The Rapid Flow Technology built into the formulation means the material flows into joints quickly and cleanly, cutting down significantly on squeegee work and cleanup time compared to older resin-based jointing products.
One of the biggest reasons hardscape contractors reach for Nitro-X over polymeric sand: it's the right choice for outdoor porcelain tile, porcelain pavers, and porcelain slabs. These materials have very tight joints — often just 1/8" to 1/4" — where standard polymeric sand simply won't perform. Nitro-X is engineered for exactly that joint width, making it the go-to jointing sand for porcelain tile patios, pool decks, and walkways. It also handles the full 1/8" to 2" range for concrete pavers, natural stone, bluestone, travertine, and flagstone.
Important installation note every contractor should know: the paving surface must be pre-wetted and kept wet during the entire installation process. If the surface dries out during application, staining can occur. This is the opposite of how you install polymeric sand, so take it seriously if you're switching products on the same day.
Tested for durability: Nitro-X has been evaluated for resistance to swimming pool chlorine and winter de-icing salt. After extended immersion testing, no deterioration was observed — making it a reliable choice for pool deck jointing and driveway applications where salt exposure is a concern.

Nitro-X vs. SuperSand G2 Polymeric Sand — which do you need?If your pavers are on a traditional base and your joints are under 2", Gator SuperSand G2 is a simpler water-activated install sold in 50 lb bags. Choose Nitro-X when you need porcelain tile compatibility, prefer an air-cure resin jointing system, or want a job-site-proven rigid joint on pavers, natural stone, or porcelain.
⚠ Do NOT use Nitro-X for these applications
— Any base with large aggregate voids — product will migrate downward
— Overlay installations over existing concrete slabs
— Any installation where pavers or stone have movement prior to jointing — movement voids the warranty and will crack joints
— Heavy-duty commercial vehicle traffic
— Pool coping blocks — mortar is required in those joints; Nitro-X is for the surrounding paver field only
Is Gator Nitro-X Right for Your Project?
Outdoor porcelain tile, porcelain pavers & porcelain slabs — the primary reason most contractors choose Nitro-X. Handles joints as tight as 1/8" (3 mm) where standard polymeric sand has no business being. Maximum joint width for porcelain is 1/4" (6 mm)
Concrete pavers & concrete slabs — works across the full joint range from 1/8" up to 2" on drainage base installations. Delivers a harder, more rigid joint than polymeric sand
Natural stone & wet cast stone — the fine gradation flows cleanly into irregular joint profiles without bridging, making it the go-to for flagstone, bluestone, travertine, and similar materials
Patios, walkways & pool decks — pedestrian use on all approved base systems. Pool surrounds require a slope of at least 1/8" per linear foot away from the pool
Residential driveways with light vehicle traffic — approved for passenger cars and light vehicles with a Total Authorized Weight Loaded (TAWL) not exceeding 7,700 lbs (3,500 kg). Not rated for heavy-duty commercial vehicle loads
Jobs where weather can't be predicted — because Nitro-X installs rain or shine (once the surface is pre-wetted), you're not racing the weather the way you are with water-activated polymeric sand
Approved base systems
— Traditional drainage base (compacted crushed stone with sand or chip setting bed)
— Permeable base
— Hybrid base
— Gator Base system — pedestrian use only
— Chip stone setting bed (1/8"–1/4" chip that locks or chokes itself)
✓ Chlorine & Salt Resistant — Pool Deck & Driveway Tested
Nitro-X has been tested for resistance to swimming pool chlorine and de-icing salt. After extended immersion testing, no deterioration of the cured joint material was observed. A solid choice for pool surrounds and driveways where salt exposure is a seasonal reality.
What Makes Gator Nitro-X Different From Standard Polymeric Sand
Air-Cure Formula
Cures by air exposure — no water activation step. The resin hardens from the top of the joint all the way down through the full depth on its own. You're not fighting rain windows or trying to get a water step right. As long as air can reach the joint, the cure happens.
Rapid Flow Technology
The extra-fine calibrated gradation flows into joints quickly with a squeegee or stiff broom. Less back-and-forth, less cleanup, less leftover material on the surface. On tight-jointed porcelain tile especially, this is a meaningful time saver compared to coarser joint materials.
Porcelain Tile Ready
Handles joint widths as narrow as 1/8" (3 mm) — the standard joint on outdoor porcelain tile, porcelain pavers, and porcelain slabs. Standard polymeric sand is not suitable for joints this tight. Nitro-X is one of the only joint sands on the market engineered specifically for this application.
Install Rain or Shine
Unlike water-activated polymeric sands, you're not chasing dry weather windows. Rain will slow the cure but won't wash Nitro-X out of a properly filled joint. Pre-wet the surface before you start, keep it wet throughout, then let the product do its job regardless of the forecast.
Extremely Hard When Cured
Full cure strength is reached at 28 days. The final joint is rigid and dense — harder than standard polymeric sand. This is why zero paver movement before installation is non-negotiable. A moving paver will crack a Nitro-X joint. Make sure your base is completely solid before you start.
Low Permeability
Nitro-X has low permeability when installed — tighter than the standard Gator Nitro which is fully permeable. Over time permeability can reduce further if joints aren't kept clean. Periodic pressure washing after the 28-day cure window keeps joint surfaces clear and functioning properly.
5 Designer Colors
Available in Black, Gunmetal, Taupe, Platinum, and Vanilla. A more refined color palette than most polymeric sands, and well suited to porcelain and natural stone projects where joint color is part of the finished look. Coverage varies slightly by color — check the Coverage tab before ordering.
Ready-to-Use — No Mixing
Open the 27.5 lb pail and you're ready to go. No pre-mixing, no separating components. The pail format is easy to carry and pour on the job, which makes it practical to work in tight sections within the 45-minute working window — especially when two people are on the job.
Available Colors — Gator Nitro-X Fine Joint Sand
Nitro-X comes in five colors: Black, Gunmetal, Taupe, Platinum, and Vanilla. All five use the same air-cure resin jointing formula — color choice is purely aesthetic to complement your concrete paver, natural stone, porcelain tile, or wet cast stone installation.
Coverage varies by color because darker pigments affect density. Black joint sand covers slightly less per pail than lighter colors like Platinum, Taupe, and Vanilla. See the Coverage tab for the full breakdown by joint width and color before you order.
Not sure which color suits your paving material?Screen colors always look different outdoors on actual material. Order a color sample before committing to full pails on a large job.
How Many Pails of Nitro-X Fine Joint Sand Do You Need?
Coverage varies significantly by joint width and color. Gator Nitro-X is sold in 27.5 lb (12.5 kg) pails — not bags like standard polymeric sand. Numbers below are from the manufacturer's published Technical Data Sheet based on a 12"×12"×2-3/8" concrete paver or a 24"×24"×3/4" porcelain tile. How to Install Gator Nitro-X Fine Joint Sand — Step by Step
⚠ Read Before You Start — This Is Different From Polymeric Sand
Nitro-X is NOT a water-activated product. You do not water it in at the end. Instead, the surface must be pre-wetted before application and kept wet throughout the entire installation. If the surface dries out during the process, resin can stain the paving surface. You have approximately 45 minutes of working time per section. Plan your work accordingly.
1
Confirm base and paver stability — zero movement tolerance
Every paver, stone, or porcelain tile must be fully locked into position with absolutely no movement before Nitro-X goes into the joints. This is non-negotiable. Because Nitro-X cures rigid and hard, any paver movement after installation will crack the joint. A cracked joint voids the warranty. If anything moves, fix the base first. Installation must be on an approved drainage base system — Nitro-X cannot be used on overlay applications over concrete slabs.
2
Pre-wet the entire paving surface thoroughly
Set your hose to a shower setting and wet the entire area you plan to work in that session. The surface must be wet — and stay wet — throughout the application. If it's a hot day or you're in direct sun, you'll need more water to keep the surface damp. Don't skip this step and don't let the surface dry mid-job.
3
Open pail and spread Nitro-X across the wet surface
Pour the contents of the pail onto the pre-wetted surface. Use a squeegee or stiff-bristle broom to work the material diagonally across the surface and into all joints. The Rapid Flow Technology helps the fine sand move into joints quickly. Work section by section within your 45-minute window — do not pour more material than you can work in that time. Two people on a larger job makes this much more manageable.
4
Keep surface wet — rinse excess off as you go
As you work, continue wetting the surface with a hose. Use the squeegee or broom to keep pushing material into joints and to rinse any surface residue into the joints or off the edges. Excess Nitro-X left on the surface during curing can stain. Clean it off before it sets. Any leftover product from an opened pail can be stored with 2" of water covering the sand and the lid sealed tightly — it will stay workable for up to 4 additional weeks.
5
Optional: finish joint surface with a mason jointing tool
For a cleaner, more finished appearance — especially on natural stone or premium porcelain jobs — you can run a mason's jointing tool along each joint after filling. This can only be done while the product is still in the curing phase (within the working window). Once cured, the joint is too hard to tool.
6
Allow to cure — 18 hours walk-on, 28 days full strength
Rain will slow the curing process but will not wash Nitro-X out of properly filled joints. If heavy rain occurs during early curing, check joints once it clears and touch up any areas that need it. The surface can be walked on after 18 hours. Full cured strength is reached at 28 days. Do not pressure wash for a minimum of 28 days after installation.
△ Do not apply Nitro-X if any of these conditions exist
— Temperature is at or below 37°F (3°C)
— Any paver, stone, or tile has movement — fix the base first
— Pavers are installed over aggregates with large voids — product will migrate through
— Overlay installation over an existing concrete slab — Nitro-X is for drainage base only
— You cannot complete a section within the 45-minute working window — work smaller sections
Nitro-X joints are low-maintenance once fully cured, but there are a few things worth knowing to keep them looking and performing well over time.
Routine surface cleaning: Use Gator Shampoo or a paver-safe cleaner applied to the full surface including joints. Rinse with a standard garden hose at shower setting — normal residential pressure (around 80 psi) is fine for routine cleaning after the 28-day initial cure period
Pressure washing: Wait a minimum of 28 days after installation before using a pressure washer on the surface. After that window, periodic pressure washing actually helps maintain joint permeability by clearing dirt and debris from the joint surface
Permeability over time: Nitro-X has low permeability as installed. If joints are not maintained, permeability can reduce further as debris accumulates. Periodic cleaning — including pressure washing after 28 days — keeps joints performing properly
Moss, mold & mildew: These are site conditions, not material failures. Excess shade, moisture, and organic debris cause them. A paver-safe surface cleaner handles them once they appear. Trim back overhanging plants and improve drainage to prevent recurrence
Leftover product in an open pail: Pour 2" of water over the remaining Nitro-X and seal the pail tightly. Stored this way, leftover material stays workable for up to 4 additional weeks. Do not store in freezing temperatures
Unopened pail storage: Keep pails in a covered area out of direct sun, or indoors. Shelf life is 24 months at temperatures between -22°F and 86°F (-30°C to 30°C). Pails can be double-stacked for storage but not during transport

Frequently Asked Questions — Gator Nitro-X Fine Joint Sand
These are two completely different types of jointing material. Gator SuperSand G2 is a water-activated polymeric sand sold in 50 lb bags — you sweep it in dry and activate it with water at the end. Nitro-X is an air-cure resin jointing sand sold in 27.5 lb pails — the surface must be wet during application and the product cures on its own when exposed to air. Nitro-X is also the right choice when you need to fill porcelain tile joints (1/8"–1/4"), which G2 isn't designed for. If you have concrete pavers on a traditional base with joints under 2", G2 is a simpler install. If you're working with porcelain, natural stone with variable joints, or just prefer an air-cure system, Nitro-X is what you want.
Yes — and this is one of the main reasons Nitro-X exists. It handles joint widths as narrow as 1/8" (3 mm), which is the standard joint for outdoor porcelain tile installations. Maximum joint width for porcelain is 1/4" (6 mm). The porcelain must be installed using the Gator Tile System with a minimum joint depth of 3/4" (20 mm), and there can be absolutely no movement in any tile before you apply Nitro-X. If a tile moves, Nitro-X will crack that joint.
Pre-wetting is required to prevent the resin in Nitro-X from staining the paving surface as you spread it. If the surface is dry when you apply the material, the resin can bond to the face of the pavers or tile rather than flowing cleanly into the joints. Keep the surface wet throughout the entire application — not just at the start. On hot days or in direct sun, you'll need to re-wet frequently. This is completely different from polymeric sand installation where dry pavers are required.
Once you open a pail and start spreading Nitro-X, you have roughly 45 minutes to work the material into joints and clean excess off the surface before it starts to set. Don't pour out more product than you can work in that window. On larger jobs, work in sections — wet a section, apply, work it in, clean up, then move to the next section. Having a second person on the job helps you stay within the working window on bigger areas.
Yes. Nitro-X can be installed rain or shine. Rain will slow the curing process but won't wash a properly filled joint out. The surface should already be wet when you start applying, so rain doesn't create the same problem it does with polymeric sand. If heavy rain occurs right after application before joints are well-filled, check for washout once weather clears and touch up as needed.
Nitro-X reaches walk-on strength in 18 hours but doesn't reach its full cured hardness until 28 days. Pressure washing before full cure can dislodge or damage joints that are still in the process of hardening. After 28 days, the joint is fully cured and can handle pressure washing — which is actually recommended periodically to maintain joint permeability by keeping debris out.
Because Nitro-X cures rigid and hard, any paver, stone, or tile movement after installation will crack the joint. This is why the manufacturer requires zero movement in any paving unit before jointing begins — and any movement voids the warranty. If you have any units that seem loose before starting, stop and fix the base. Don't try to lock down a moving paver with jointing material. It will fail.
Both are air-cure resin joint sands, but Nitro-X uses a finer calibrated sand with a newer proprietary resin formula. The Rapid Flow Technology in Nitro-X improves how the material flows into tight joints. Nitro-X also has lower permeability than the original Nitro, which means it seals more tightly. The Nitro-X pail is 27.5 lb vs the original Nitro's 40 lb pail. If you're choosing between them for a porcelain tile or tight-joint natural stone job, Nitro-X is the more current and refined option.
Pour approximately 2 inches of water over the remaining Nitro-X in the pail, then seal the lid tightly. Stored this way, the leftover product stays workable for up to 4 additional weeks. Don't expose an open or partially open pail to air for an extended period — the air-cure process will begin and the material will harden in the pail.

No — Nitro-X is a resin joint sand, not a polymeric sand. Polymeric sand is water-activated: you sweep it dry into joints and then water it in to activate the binders. Nitro-X is air-cure: the surface must be pre-wetted before application and the product hardens entirely through air exposure with no water activation step. The two products look similar in the bag but install completely differently and are suited to different job types. Nitro-X also handles much tighter joints (down to 1/8") than most polymeric sands, making it the right product for porcelain tile and fine natural stone work.
Yes, with conditions. Nitro-X is rated for pedestrian use and light vehicular traffic — specifically passenger cars and light vehicles with a Total Authorized Weight Loaded (TAWL) of 7,700 lbs (3,500 kg) or less. That covers standard residential driveways used by personal vehicles. It is not rated for heavy-duty trucks, commercial vehicles, or heavy equipment. The driveway must also be on a proper drainage base — Nitro-X cannot be used as an overlay over an existing concrete slab. As long as those conditions are met, it makes a hard, durable joint well suited to driveway paver installations.
