What Is Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand?
We've been supplying polymeric sand to homeowners and contractors for over 30 years, and Gator Maxx G2 is the most versatile jointing sand we carry. It handles wider joints, overlay work on concrete slabs, and more paver types than any other G2-formula sand in the Alliance lineup.
What makes it different is the second-generation polymer formula. When you activate it with water, those polymers bind the sand tightly into the joint while neutralizing dust and haze. The result is a clean, residue-free application with no leaf blower step needed — just sweep, compact, and water.
Once cured, it hardens into a firm but flexible joint — strong enough to lock pavers against traffic and weather, flexible enough to handle freeze-thaw movement without cracking. It's also the only Alliance sand we'd recommend for overlay installations over an existing concrete slab.

Is This the Right Polymeric Sand for Your Job?
Patio pavers & pool decks — our primary recommendation for in-ground pool surrounds. Requires 1/8" per foot slope away from pool. Pool coping must use mortar

What Gator Maxx G2 Keeps Out of Your Paver Joints
A properly installed polymeric sand joint keeps weeds out, keeps insects out, and resists erosion. Here's how G2 handles each:
Weed sprouting in paver joints — polymer-locked joints leave no loose soil for weed seeds. Weeds growing through joints become rare
Ant tunneling & insect damage — ants can't tunnel through a hardened polymeric sand joint, preventing base destabilization
Rain & wind erosion / washout — regular paver sand washes out after heavy storms. G2's polymer bond holds the joint material in place
Freeze-thaw cracking — G2 stays flexible after curing so it expands and contracts with temperature swings rather than cracking out
Paver shifting under load — dense locked joints keep the surface stable under foot traffic and vehicles
Haze & dust residue on pavers — G2's key improvement over first-gen sands: no white polymer residue on the paver face after application
G2 does not prevent moss, mold, or mildew — those come from shade, moisture, and poor drainage on-site, not from the jointing sand.

How to Install Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand — Step by Step

Confirm everything is completely dry
The most common installation mistake — starting on pavers that aren't fully dry. Any moisture activates the polymers early, leaving white residue on pavers. Wait for a dry day, or give pressure-washed pavers at least 24–48 hours. All pavers must be interlocked per ICPI Tech Spec #2. Do not apply over asphalt.
ⓘ Overlay installs: drainage holes (2" dia., 10 ft spacing) must be in place, filled with 3/8" stone, covered with Gator Fabric GF4.4.

Spread and sweep polymeric sand into all joints
Pour G2 onto the dry surface. Use a hard-bristle broom to work it into every joint in multiple directions. Leave a thin layer on top for compaction. Narrow paver joints need extra passes — they won't fill in one sweep.

Compact with a plate compactor
Run a vibratory plate compactor with a rubber protective pad. Work in multiple directions to eliminate air pockets. Repeat sweeping and compacting until joints are fully packed. Sand level must end up at least 1/8" below the paver surface or chamfer edge.
ⓘ On textured or pre-finished pavers, clear all surface sand before compacting to avoid scratching the face.

Sweep off excess — no leaf blower needed
Hard-bristle broom first, then soft broom. With G2 you stop here — no blower step. One of the biggest time-savers compared to first-generation polymeric sands.

Activate with water — shower setting, section by section
Set hose to shower. Start at the lowest point. Water each 30 sq ft section for about 30 seconds until G2 repels the water and it begins pooling on the joints. Move immediately to the next section. Stop when you see standing water. Over-watering washes the sand out.
ⓘ On slopes and pool surrounds: always start at the lowest point and work upward. Starting at the top pulls sand downhill.

Stay off until fully cured
Rain-safe in 15 minutes on traditional base, 24 hours on overlays. The joints will form a firm crust on top — completely normal, by design. Keep foot traffic and vehicles off until fully cured.

Gator Maxx G2 is low-maintenance compared to regular paver sand, but not zero-maintenance. Here's what we recommend:
Routine cleaning: Gator Shampoo or paver-safe cleaner on the full surface including joints. Regular garden hose on shower setting at standard residential pressure — no pressure washing needed
White haze: Clean with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. Usually efflorescence from the pavers triggered by water activation. Also fades naturally over time
Moss, mold, mildew: A drainage and shade problem, not a sand problem. Paver-safe surface cleaner handles it. Improve drainage and trim overhanging plants to prevent recurrence
Re-sanding: Remove all old jointing material completely first. Don't apply new G2 on top of old sand. Pavers must be fully dry. Then follow steps 1–6
Leftover bags: G2 ships in waterproof bags. Store lying flat, front facing up. Sealed bags are fine outdoors

Frequently Asked Questions About Gator Maxx G2 Polymeric Sand
Yes — G2 is specifically formulated to repel water rather than absorb it, which is what makes it work where regular polymeric sands fail on concrete slab bases. Rain-safe time for overlays is 24 hours (vs. 15 minutes for a traditional drainage base).
Both use the same G2 polymer technology. Super Sand G2 handles paver joints up to 2" on traditional base only — no overlay use. Maxx G2 handles joints up to 4" on traditional base and up to 2" on overlays.
Yes, completely normal and by design. The cured top layer forms a protective crust spanning from chamfer to chamfer. The densely packed sand below is doing the structural work. This is not a sign of installation failure.
White residue is typically efflorescence from the pavers triggered by water activation, or polymer residue from applying on pavers that weren't completely dry. Both respond well to Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. The haze also fades naturally over time.
No — the manufacturer advises against this and so do we. The entire joint depth must be G2. With regular paver sand below, water and ice penetrate from underneath and push the G2 layer out over time.
The polymers may never properly cure — leaving the sand weak and unable to lock your pavers. Wait for temperatures above freezing, including overnight temperatures during the curing window.
No. G2's intelligent polymers don't leave residue on the paver face. A broom sweep after compaction is all you need before watering.
